I play 85% of my games on the Xbox and am very happy with the amazing DTS 5.1

But a lot of the newer PS2 games now support Pro Logic II. My Sony receiver only supports Pro Logic I. Since PS2 games don't run in DTS 5.1, I'm assuming PLII is the next best thing. Should I buy a new receiver? While I'm a bit strapped for funds right now, I'd much rather be playing PS2 games in PLII than plain old stereo surround. Thanks!

It's up to you. You can do Pro Logic I encoding with a Pro Logic II source. Pro Logic I has a single rear speaker; Pro Logic II has rear left and rear right. If you turn on PL-I, all your rear speaker activity will go to the single speaker.

There's also PLII-X out now. Not entirely sure what the difference is there.

Go digital dude, those are'nt even digital formats.

If your looking for a receiver get one with at least DTS and DD5.1, and PL2 since your looking.

You can get a good one now a days for less than 200

Xbox does DD 5.1, not DTS 5.1

That said, I don't think you would notice enough of a difference between your ps2 over your current system vs. your ps2 over a new receiver that did PLII to warrant a new receiver purchase. If the receiver itself is an upgrade it might make sense, but getting a receiver just for PLII rather than PL in PS2 games is hard to justify.

My post was misleading. As well as supporting Pro Logic, it also supports DTS and all the other digital formats. It's only 2 year old. I've got both my Xbox and PS2 running through optical audio inputs.

Xbox does have dts encoding but I can't name one game that uses it. Maybe it's there for movie playback, never tried that. Anyway you probably are not hearing DTS 5.1 but rather Dolby 5.1 and if your receiver supports both of them I wouldn't upgrade just to get PLII. Personally I'd wait a few years and upgrade then since it seems like you're pretty happy w/ it otherwise.

Looking at your system from your thread with pics, it looks like you have a sony htib combo'd with a nice screen there. It might be worthwhile to look at upgrading your receiver/speaker combo, but I'd still wait till you could afford something mid-range instead of jumping on a new htib that just gave you the PL2 option.

I upgraded my htib about a year ago to a mid range hk receiver with jbl speakers + hsu sub. The speakers forum will always be alive with talk on what's out there and what's going to give you the bargain bang for your buck. I've been very happy with my upgrade so far - the hsu has some serious kick. There is also a frequency "hole" with most htib systems where your not getting all the sound that is being broadcast. You won't notice it as much in tv or video games, but it is really there when playing music. Music does still sound good, it's just a lot "fuller" when you have speakers that are handling the full range. I also noticed a big difference in movies as soundtracks seemed to jump out a lot more after the upgrade.

I think you meant 'decoding'. I seriously doubt the XBox can do real-time DTS encoding.

For PS2 I wouldn't upgrade to a PLII receiver if that is your only missing feature. If you already have PLI and Dolby and DTS in your current reciever its probably not worth it. The difference between PLI and II Isn't that huge and few games really take full advantage of it anyway. YOu can still get surround effects from your PS2 games with PLI, just not sepereate rear channels. It can still sound very good though.

ProLogic IIx takes simulated surround to the next step by taking a stereo signal, or 5.1 signal, and creating a 7.1 (or 6.1, depending on your setup) simulated signal.

Here is Dolby's detailed info on PLIIx: ProLogic IIx

Again, a true digital signal with discrete channels is better than any of the PL simulations, but they do have their place.

Just FYI.
