This is a really nice list D-DM. Of course, as expected I disagree with some of the rankings and inclusions (and maybe one or two exclusions), but you have such a large breadth of choices and time periods represented, that it really adds credibility to your list. There are several I haven't seen, and I consider myself a horror genre fan. Very nice job.

American Pyscho, a horror film?? Nope - a great dark comedy. Shaun of the Dead? Zombies, yes, horror, no. Return of the Living Dead? borderline. I can't really argue with the top 5, but it would be tough get give them any ranking. Not a bad list.

Wow! That's quite an impressive list. My nit-picks:

-- "Creepshow" was one of the worst movies I can remember seeing; absolutely worthless.

-- "Se7en" is one I'd not consider in the horror category, but I agree it's a great film.

-- "Dellamorte Dellamore" is a quirky addition to your list. Whether it is great horror or not, it certainly features one of the finest looking victims in movie history.

Since you included "The Wicker Man" in your top 25, I am curious to know if you will watch the newly-released Nicholas Cage movie of the same name? Everything I've read on it is discouraging, but the original was very creepy.

Dellamorte Dellamore is considered by many to be the unofficial end of the Italian Horror era. On its surface it may seem like a little comedic Horror flick but it's pedigree runs much deeper with themes and conventions used by Vertigo and Citizen Kane. Also the film can be viewed as a sad love letter by a director who grew up in the industry, only to see it all but dead by the time he made the film. Truly one of, if not thee, best Horror films of the '90s.

Regarding The Wicker Man remake, I'm not one to immediately shun Horror remakes, but seriously the original is so good a remake would just be spinning wheels. Also the overwhelming amount of negative reviews doesn't make it look appealing. Two recent remakes I did enjoy were Dawn of the Dead and The Hills Have Eyes.

Also PooperScooper, Shaun of the Dead is indeed Horror, it's just been joined with its sister genre, Comedy. Also as the situation becomes more and more desperate in the Winchester the scale tips and it unmistakenly becomes a Horror film. It so effective it even beats other "pure" zombie films with some its use of it's "zombie-centric" themes, like dealing with the "turn" of a loved one.

DND: You said that Dellamorte... is one of the best horror films of the 90s, so I reviewed the dates on your list again. Looks like you have been starving for good horror for a while, as the most recent release that made your top 50 is 1983's "Videodrome" at #42. Some have been hailing a renewal of the horror genre in the past few years--do you have any comments on the recent crop of movies released as horror films?

The Descent should be on the list

Lost Boys should be on as well but I have added several to my Netflix list. Nicely done! Another one I enjoyed was Mr. Frost with Jeff Goldblum as Satan in a mental hospital.

I see your point and "technically" probably agree. But, I don't know of anybody who was scared in the least watching Shaun of the Dead. :)

A lot of great horror movies aren't particularly scary either. Most zombie movies aren't known for their scare factor so much as the gore factor.

All in all I think its a great list and although I may disagree here and there I won't nitpick it because I'd be hard pressed to come up with my top 100. The top picks are dead on.

There are an awful lot of great, old horror films, from the 30's and 40's, and even 50's that were not mentioned. Stuff like "The Body Snatchers" with Boris Karloff.

It sure seems like you're prejudiced against the old, black & white classics.

Where's "The Wolfman"? Or "The Mummy"? Or even some of the lesser known classics, like "The Body Snatcher", with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi?

Or are those not "gory" enough for you?

This is a cool list, with foreign films, older films, silent films and more modern gorefests. I haven't seen about 50 of the films and will try to find a few of the ones I haven't seen. My list would include more of the old classics from Val Lewton and some newer films that rely more on atmosphere. As far as thinking some of his films are more comedy than horror, that can be true depending on your point of view. For some it has to be impossible to watch a zombie film without finding a lot of laughs. For me, Young Frankenstein made it difficult to avoid laughter now with the original classics it parodied. I can't think of two film genres that work so well together as horror and comedy.

I forgot, there's "Feed", true horror. :) Descent - I, too, agree it is in the Top 100.

I don't think that one is available on DVD yet. The film used 123 years ago wasn't very good and the restoration process is taking a lot longer than expected.

Why am I only at #50?

Other than that, it's a great list!

Candyman. That movie bummed me out. I got all the way through it until the last scene, and I just couldn't take the tension anymore...it was just too much. I'm surprised I made it that far.
