This is here for the readers who get inundated with confusing and incorrect claims to the effect that:
Poor (as in unacceptable / close to SD quality) encodings are the fault of the format and not the studio.
It's a Myth, bigtime. Studios (such as Sony with TFE) are at fault.

There are examples from both sides of poor looking titles. Some are due to poor-condition masters (TFE i think), some due to inherently bad source material etc. Please ask the content-owners to get their act together. Both formats provide excellent PQ when used to their potential with a proper source.

There is no point cursing either of the formats for studio incompetency.

There is a more interesting question. What percentage of movies (let's say, arbitrarily, American movies made since 1950) are simply going to look bad in HD because it's the best they can look?

I wonder how the general public is going to react to bad looking HD movies.

I know this: I was suprised to see the reviews of a few titles mention that the upconverted SD DVD looked as good or almost so. If I read that I will NOT buy the HD version - I don't care what format it is. I am not buying any format for the "HD" aspect if the upconverted SD version is just as good.
