first post and whatnot (but at least I know where to ask, right?) ;)

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting an x-1. Quite an change from my current 27" Trinitron. I'll be using it primarily for DVDs (movies and anime), and gaming (X-Box, Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn, SNES, NES, 2600, etc. etc. etc.). That said, what aspect ratio should I go for with the screen? 16:9 (likely 80x45) and settle for a 60x45 4:3 image, or get a full 4:3 screen (80x60), and settle for extra screen space on widescreen presentations (which could be corrected with black felt strips, right?)?

I had these exact same thoughts. I ended up with a 80x45 screen. This gives me 60x45 for 4:3 content. My reasoning is most of my content will be wide screen movies (2:35, 1.85, 1.77) so I wanted to fill the screen as much as possible most the time. Plus it didn't make sense to me to blow up my poor quality 4:3 content (cable TV) larger than my nice quality DVDs. So 4:3 content has masking on the sides which I made out of black curtains. 2.35 content has black masking on the top and bottom made out of the same black curtain material. Others may disagree but I personally am very happy.
