So, NAB 2014 is just 18 days away. What new goodies will be coming our way that week?

I'm really hoping BlackMagic Design has something else up their sleeves to keep all the big guys on their toes, especially after KineRaw announced a 6k Super 35mm camera with 14-stop dynamic range 12-bit color at 6k and 16-stops 14-bit color at 3k (along with some high frame rate options). I get the feeling we won't get any new cameras from them this year, but will in 2015. Hope I'm wrong though. Excited to see what else comes out, but I doubt anything barring a new BM camera will top the GH4 on paper,

Canon will probably have something out. Very likely updates for the cinema EOS cameras, possibly the 7D2, if they are positioning it as a GH4 competitor. They may have new 4K professional/semipro camcorders as well.

Sony may update their pro range of cameras, I think that would be the next step for them.

Panasonic will almost certainly have their new professional cameras on display.

Probably something from JVC as well.

BM, maybe, but I doubt it. They may announce something, but as we know, with them delivery will be a year or two after that.

Arri could have a modern 4K contender out for the show, they have not been generating any buzz lately at all.

It would be nice to get something from Canon and Panasonic in the 4k camcorders to compete with the Sony AX-100 4k cam.

I'll be surprised if it actually happens this year.

I don't think Canon would but 4K in the 7D2 since they would be stuck with a bunch of 1D C, C100 and C300 cameras.

Those cameras can't compete in the GH4 space because they are too expensive. If Canon wants to compete in video at all in the advanced consumer market they will have to make 4K products at that price point, not $10K.

Panasonic and Sony have very expensive 4K professional products as well, but that didn't stop them from making consumer versions. So why would it stop Canon?

There are tons of sales going for Canon stuff at the moment, both cameras and lenses, so I think they have a lot of new products about to hit the market and they are reducing inventory of older models.

Panasonic's emphasis is likely to be on the Varicam 35: http://www.houseofjapan.com/electronics/panasonic-varicam-35-4k-avc-ultra

The GH4 will also draw big crowds.

Sony will push the 4K internal recording upgrade to F5 / F55 and 4K for consumers and pros (e.g., AX100 and AX1 )

If Canon rolls out a 7D2 with no improvements to their resolution, compression scheme or codec, they'll be embarrassing themselves.

I think I've convinced my wife to let me go this year
, so I'll be live blogging from the show floor and I'll post a full report when I get back.

Panasonic should also be showing off the 4K version of the AC90. Cannon has showed off a camera with a 2/3" chlp in the past. It looked like a blow dryer but perhaps it shaped more like a camcorder.

Should or shouldn't I take a trip to NAB this year? That is the question. I've been wanting to attend one for years. I havn't been to Las Vegas yet eighter. It'll be expensive going their though but it might be worth it. We'll see.

NAB is exciting to go to at least once. Plan at least 2-3 days just at that massive convention center. I started wanting to look at everything then realized it wasn't going to happen, so had to just walk past things unless I was really interested in it. It's really only worth going if you are interested in everything about production and broadcast. You'll see solutions you didn't even know existed. I probably wouldn't go again because I record stuff only as a hobby these days. Also you gotta do Vegas, so plan to do plenty of other stuff if you go. Eat at Bayside Buffet and Mandalay Bay. Mmmmm I need to go there again.

If I go, I'll only be able to fly on the 9th and so I'll be at NAB on the 10th and then possibly fly back on eighter the 11th or 12th. This way, I'll just miss a day of work. If I fly on the 8th, that would be 2 days of work I'd miss. I might also go to the Azores this year in the summer and I'll want to be their for many days. I figure if I just go to the booths I'm very interested in, 1 day at NAB should be enough.

Just some advice for anyone who goes. You don't have to pay $150 for the exhibits pass. Just use one of many free codes that you can find online. Also, it'll be good to book your flight and hotel as quickly as possible so if anyone is thinking of flying their, it's best to decide as quickly as possible. I'll probably spend another day or 2 to decide this. If I go, I'll be sure to record some videos and get as much info possible. Obviously if money was no option, I'd go from the first day so that I can catch some of the News Conferences.

Remember that the rumours sites deal specifically with EOS cameras, so they might well have other new conventional video cameras as well.

Today is actually the last day for free codes for many of these places and luckily I registered yesterday. I think I'm perhaps 51% sure that I'll go. Now to decide if I want to miss 1 or 2 days off work. This is driving me crazy. The good news is that the last day should have the least amount of people so it wont take as long to get up close and personal with all the new equipment and spend enough time talking to the reps. I do have a video idea in mind in which I might need an extra day at the exhibits. I'll definitely have a lot of good extra videos on my YouTube channel.

Are you planning on attending the news conferences or just the exhibits?

So it looks like that if I do go, I'll probably decide to be at the Convention center for 2 days (Wednesday and Thursday). I might regret only going for the last day especially knowing that I plan on doing some video shooting as well for my YouTube channel.

This is one extra place you might want to attend while in Las Vegas http://supermeet.com/ . It's from 4:30 to 11pm. Some of the big companies will be their. That's on the day I might fly. I'm really going to have to have a long nap on the flight since I'd be heading to that immediately after I put my stuff in the hotel. You'll have to buy the tickets very quickly though before it sells out. It's only $15 to attend.

If you book a hotel through NAB, you'll be able to go on a shuttle that will pick you up from your Hotel and and bring you to the Convention Center.

Never-mind 51%, the chances of me going is 75% now.

NAB 2014 looks to be a blockbuster year. With 4K now the standard on the capture side – and the post side picking up steam – we expect to see an array of new 4K products, including Panasonic’s new GH4 and Varicam 35. I’m sure Sony will have a few 4K news to announce as well. Will Blackmagic Design release another blockbuster camera? We’ll know soon enough.

Just the exhibits - I got an exhibit-only pass from Adorama. They've been a great sponsor for my blog, and I buy a lot of my equipment there, so that's why I went with them.

I land on Monday afternoon and will be on the floor on Tuesday and Wednesday, flying home on Thursday morning - my wife wants me back at work on Friday so as not to burn up too much vacation from my day job

Send me a note over on the PM side and maybe we can connect for an "AVS Camcorder Group" lunch on Wednesday.

Cheers and hope to see you there,

I've fully made up my mind and will be heading to Las Vegas. I'll obviously be doing some sight seeing around Las Vegas as well. Too many places to see such as this this shopping center at the Venetian Hotel.

This is the same place where they'll have the last official NAB after party. That's good because that's one of the places I want to visit anyway.

So, trying to figure out what might be new with Canon. There are rumours of new EOS cameras of various sorts of course, but what about other camera types?

Based on what they did last year, if they announce something it will be a about 5 days before the start of the conference, so if there is anything we should expect to see a PR around Monday or Tuesday next week. That is what happened last year with the G30/XA20/XA25, the announcement was on the 3rd, and the conference began on the 8th.

I was looking through the conference program, and apparently they will be running a session called "Canon Small Chip Sensor Workshop". The abstract for the session is:

"Discover how to create and deliver near instant video production in the field and in the studio with the XA20, XA25, and Vixia Mini X. Learn how to take advantage of their incredible image quality and superb Wi-Fi capabilities, and see what's new for 2014 within the Canon small chip sensor camera line. "

I read that to be a workshop on the use of the three existing cameras, followed by an introduction of what is new for 2014 (in other words, small sensor cameras we don't know about yet that are targeted at the audience that uses the three cameras in the workshop).

So maybe they will have new camcorder(/s) out this year.
