I have somewhere between 46 and 47 inches of width to fit a cable converter 17", my center channel speaker 13.75" and an AVR. My current HK AVR325 is about 17" which means I would have to stagger the three.

Are there any decent entry level 5.1 or 7.1 AVR's in the 15-16" width range?

Personally, I've never seen an AVR narrower than ~17". That is the spacing to fit between the rails of a 19" rack.

What about height; could you fit the cable box on top of the AVR?

I can't think of any, other than maybe some crappy HTIB units.

I don't know what your options to this other suggestion are, but it's generally far better to plan your furniture around your equipment than to plan your equipment around your furniture.

True, but the built in came with the house and I'm not ready to tear it out yet so I need to make do. If I can get someone to engineer a shelf that can support a 78lb. plasma with only 1/8" sides(braced on the outside by the existing shelf), I may be in business.

If you're stuck with built-in shelving, how about this: Does the receiver HAVE to be on the same shelf with everything else? Can you put the receiver somewhere else out of the way (even in a closet or cabinet) and use an IR repeater system to handle remote control commands?
