Narrowed down to 4 LCDs - Need advice

2857 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  apmarkey
These are all roughly the same price. I have no way to actually check these out in person, so just going on opinion here. I don't have a lot of preferences outside of needing it to play games well, and having a nice picture quality.

- Sharp Aquos LC-37D90U

- Samsung LN-S3296D

- Panasonic 32LX600

- Sony KDL-V32XBR1

hope that helps...
Cool thanks. Anyone else have any preference as to which is the best TV to get?
i can help you narrow it down

Panny or Sharp
I have the Sony KDL-V32XBR1 and really like it. Both SD and HD are great. But I'm not a gamer.
Sharp 37D90U. For the asking price online this set is a steal!

Yeah it's either that, or I can get the 720p version (LC-37D40U) for about $1200 which is sweet. And really for a 37" at the distance i'll be sitting, 720p is perfectly fine.

But I really need to find out if it plays games well. I would assume it does since the response time is 6ms, and the Samsung for example is 8ms. And on samsung.com they specifically say their TV is great for XBOx, so the Sharp must be good. I guess i'll feel better if I hear a 1st hand confirmation of this.

Also, I need to find out how the stretch is on 4:3 channels. I heard it's terrible on the Samsung.
Trenken, Have you seen the 37inch Sharp at a store?

We also have been in the market for an LCD and we are looking at the same models you are looking at. The 32 inch Sammy is a very nice looking set. Problem - We are right at 8 ft as far as viewing distances go and we are concerned about picture size. We are having the hardest time deciding between the 32inch Samsung and a 37 inch LCD. There just doesn't seem to be a great 37incher out there on the market.

I don't think that 37 inch justifies 1080p - correct me if I am wrong. Another problem: based on internet reviews, we would have purchasaed the 37 inch Sharp 37d40U. However, trips to best buy and Ultimate has shown this set to seem "duller" than other sets next to it. Does anyone have experience with this? Is this because the settings have been turned down? Or is this set truly not that impressive.
I have a 32" Sharp that I bought close to 2 years ago and I have been very satisfied with it. DVDs look great as well as OTA HD. No issues with it at all. Also, I agree in saving some $ and getting a 720p for under 40".
I read a few reviews online and have heard nothing but great things about the LC-37D40U. I'm am very close to being sold on that one. I did originally want the 32" Samsung, but I heard there is some kind of stretch problem on 4:3 channels. I don't know if there is any truth to that, but I can't get anyone to confirm it so I became very hesitant about that TV.

Here's a review for the Sharp - http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdt...u-review.shtml .

It apparently has one of the best displays of any LCD out there. But, I haven't seen it in action yet. I'll see if I can find one this weekend.

But you're right about 1080p. There is no need for it on a 37" TV unless you are up close to it. So at 8' 1080p is a waste of money on a 37" TV.

I've settled on a 32-37" LCD HDTV. Now it's just a matter of nailing the exact one. So I'm halfway there. The Sammy does look great, but like I said, I need absolute first hand confirmation that there is no stretch problems on standard 4:3 channels. I heard that it's nad to the point where it chops heads off. So that freaked me out when I was on the verge of buying that TV.

After reading that review that I linked above, that 37" Sharp sounds fantastic. I'd like to check it out in person before buying, but I may not be able to. So I may just need to take the plunge and hope for the best. I'll make sure it's returnable before I do that though. I did a search on nextag.com and found it for about $1270.

Bumping in case anyone can confirm the rumored stretch issue with 4:3 channels on the Samsung LN-S3296D.
Trenken,

I think that you should really try to check out the 37D40U before taking that plunge. I have seen some good reviews on the 37D40U, but I have also seen some reviews similar to my own "despite praises from sites such as LCD_TV_BUYING_GUIDE at the showroom this TV isn't as impressive as others". This is what caused me to go out and see for myself, and I agreed with that assessment.

Now since my post from last night, I read the entire 37D90U thread in this forum - and based on that and other reviews (cnet, others), I am settling towards that one. It seems like there are other reasons to get that TV other than the fact that it is 1080P. It seems to do a lot of other good things as well - and actually, 1080P won't hurt us: our kids will be using this for video games, and how often do kids playing video games sit back the reccomended distance of 8-10 ft? No, they will be viewing from 4-5 feet, and in this regards, 1080P will help us. (someone did report in that thread that side-by-side, the d90u looks better than the d40u).

Having said all this, I now owe it to myself to find a D90U to see in person before taking that final plunge.

Finally, with the online prices, the d90u is only about $300-$400 better than the d40u.

well I owned a 37D40U, it was a very quality set.

there was a slight back crush when compared to some other panels I had, but it was absolutely tiny & not really a problem at all.

If you can afford it, get the D90U model, as it has better contrast & other things better other then the 1080p.
Wtfer, how would you compare the 37D90U to the Sony 32XBR1? B/C right now that's what I'm leaning towards, primarily because i've actually seen it in a store and was very impressed. If I went with the Sharp, it would be from other opinions, not mine. So I kind of feel safer at this point with the Sony.
i have been looking online for a week and visited several stores, and at the great indoors, the sharp 37D40U stood out from all others, but first glance at compusa it looked cartoony and blurry compared to sony/samsung, until i saw a panasonic plasma with the same problem i realized it was probably a bad setup.. bestbuy didn't have the 37", but they had a 32", and again it stood out, even while it was sitting in the plasma section.

i've done enough searching and it just boils down to price for me, if i can hold out for a really good retail deal or just online...123buydirect has it for just over $1,000, and amazon has the 37d42u (apparently similar except for cabinet and d-sub) for a similar cost. i'm just worried about shady sites or getting screwed from online stores if there's a problem.
