I just received this email from the Director of Operations at WTVF (Nashville's CBS affiliate):

>Mr. Brown, we turned on the HDTV transmitter this >morning, Monday 11-5-01. We are airing CBS >produced programming in HDTV. You can check >cbs.com for the current schedule. At times when >CBS is not broadcasting programming in HDTV, we >will be airing an up converted WTVF signal. You >will also find NewsChannel5 plus programming and >the radar on the other channels of our HDTV >signal.

I'm still at the office so I haven't checked it out on my TV yet. But, in summary, this is more than a little exciting.

Great news for Nashville! How are you set to receive the signal. I have a Dish 6000 so I guess I better order the module and get an antenna. Anyone have suggestions?

Yep,

Roger emailed me also. This is very cool. I just got done setting everything up.

For the record I am receiving the following channels:

56-01 - Nothing on

56-02 - Upconverted programming

56-03 - Newschannel 5+

56-04 - Doppler Radar

I am using a DishNetwork 6000 receiver with the 8-VSB tuner installed. Receiving 90-97% signal strength.

I have a Winegard Model 1902 Ghostkiller antenna with a Winegard 8700 pre-amp. I am about 25 miles from the antenna.

Can't wait to see the CBS Monday night primetime line-up in HD!!!!

Regards,

Trevor,

I am still tweaking my antenna, I currently have a signal strength of 82 in Lavergne. I have a bit of a Gray bar on the right side of the screen on 56-2, the other channels are fine.

Now you Nashville residents have one more way to bag on Memphis. Hmm, pro football, HDTV.... I guess they have a new basketball team, but Memphis residents paid through the nose to build the stadium. Way to go Nashville!

Reagan,

Another DT "Dx target".Thanks for the heads-up! Channel 56 is mostly in the clear, except for WDKY in Danville Ky.(36deg. off-axis).Wish they would have been on the air Sept.9th when I was pulling in UHF all the way down to Huntsville Al.

Lets see.Should I use the CM dish,the JBX21C-D,or the Pro Range75?

Hhmm...decisions...decisions.....

Congratulations to WTVF. Their first night of HD and no glitches! The PQ was excellent. Especially Yes, Dear and Family Law. Oh, and the CBS HD commercial is awesome looking. I can't wait to see the rest of CBS's primetime lineup in HD. Thursday night is going to be awesome, CSI in HD baby!!!

Do you guys think I could pick up the Nashville HD signal in Huntsville with a Rat Shack indoor antenna?

That is over 90 air miles away. That would be nearly impossible with an outdoor antenna, let alone an indoor one.

Getting a 72 at work. (DTC-100 fed by beat up old scanner antenna on the roof, 3 stories up, near Nashville Tech)

No reception (yet) at home, in Pleasant View. Hauppage WinTV-D tuner card, "100-mile" Radio Shack corner reflector at 15 feet but way too much cheap coax. Still, the NTSC-30 reception is crystal clear so I'm surprised no luck with DTV-56. It knows there's a signal there but can't get any lock on it.

Doug,

I'm surprised you're not getting a lock in Pleasant View. That's pretty near the antenna isn't it?

For anyone that cares, I wholly recommend the Winegard 1902 Ghostkiller antenna. It is very small, but it does a great job with analog and now with digital. I get great reception on all of the analog signals and 95% strength on the digital one. I've combined it with the Winegard 8700 pre- amp. You can purchase all of it at www.starkelectronic.com.

BTW, I noticed that there is another tower about completed next to the new Fox tower on I-24. Is that the new WKRN tower? If WKRN gets on the air, we'll have both ABC and CBS HD. Things are getting good.

I'm about 27 miles from the transmitter.

And interestingly enough, this morning I'm getting a pretty good lock - with the spare FM radio antenna, an entire 6 feet up & pointed the wrong way - I left connected to the thing when I went to bed. It breaks up once in awhile, but with that antenna lashup I'm not surprised. The WUXP-30 analog reception (antenna just across I-24 but admittedly operating at greatly educed power) is absolutely HORRIBLE on the same antenna.

I'm wondering if they turned it off after Letterman ended? I know WTMJ-DT in Milwaukee only operates between about 5pm and whenever Leno ends.

The other tower next to Fox's is for some FM stations. WKRN's permit is for a new tower immediately adjacent to their current one on OHB in Brentwood. Last I looked (admittedly about 2 months ago) they haven't started on it. Channel 8 will be at the same site.

They're back to having 56-2 audio on 56-4. My tuner card is displaying the channels as "Program 1", "Program 2", and "Program 3".

Has anyone tried an antenna attached to their dish? I was told you could use a diplexer and run from the 61.5 dish. I know this is a hardware issue, but things are moving so fast in Nashville that I wanted to stay with this thread. Thanks for the help.

An antenna attached to the dish might work. Any antenna might work. You'll have to try and see. Using a dixplexor could work also, again trial and error will tell. If you are close enough to the transmitters, you probably won't have a problem.

I am pretty close to WKRN in Brentwood, but a little further from WTVF. I have RG-6 run into the attic, just thought that small outside might work as well as bigger in the attic. It's a good problem to have. I will let you know how it turns out as soon as I get my OTA module from DISH.
