Sixty million TV homes in the U.S. can get high-definition television (HDTV) programming from their local cable operator, up 60 percent since the first of the year, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association said.
Cable's current HDTV footprint, according to NCTA figures as of Sept. 1, also includes cable subs in 83 of the top 100 - and 19 of the top 20 -- Designated Market Areas (DMAs). Additionally, at least one cable provider offers an HD channel package to 122 of the 210 DMAs nationwide, NCTA added.
The cable industry is also matching HD availability with an ever-widening library of high-def content, NCTA added, noting current offerings from HBO, Showtime, Discovery, ESPN, InDemand, MSG, Comcast SportsNet and HDNet.
