I have owned my nec 9pg for about 8 months and I have learned quite a bit. But I have run into a problem I don't know how to fix. When I focus all my colors to the sharpest they can be the red is always bigger than all the other colors and hence makes my picture look out of focus no matter how good I get it. From what i learned I need to adjust the astig I think but I am not sure all the magnets on the tube are syliconed in there place so I don't know if I should be adjusting them. If someone could give me an Idea on what to do ! All comments and suggestions are welcome please help me.

Before you turn anything mark the position of the rings so you can reset them if you mess things up...

Yes, I would guess it's astig. Peal the silicon off carefully.

Be careful though - usual warning about sticking your hands in there.

You haven't told the whole story here so don't do anything yet. What have you tried as far as focus goes. Just the lenses or are you doing electronic focus adjustments as well. Put up a cross hatch test pattern and cut off the blue and green guns. Using the rear adjustment on the red lens adjust for optimum optical center focus. Now go into the service menu and go into the focus sub-menu and do center beam focus for the red. If the projector is set up properly, optimum center beam focus should be aroud the 50% or in the middle of the on screen scale. Tell us what the number is that gives you the best center focus for the red. Another problem could be the STK392-040 chip on the F-drive board. Give us some more info before you start turning adjustments.

This was from page two that JSP started. Might check that thread also. Doug

Check the position of the focus yoke, is it pointing down like the others? Have you tried to slide it forward or back for optimum focus? You can sometimes rotate just a bit to get better control of astig. To check that set the astig magnets to the null field position, I think the manual show that.

In null you want the egg shape in the vertical plane, not side to side then you do the two and four pole magnets to correct from there.

On the deflection board there is a center focus pot for each color. Might check that for optimum looking in the lens first then check the screen.

If astig is off the test pattern will move when ramping center focus, use a cross hair or cross hatch test pattern to check. This will show two poll and four pole will flare to one side or top to bottom at extreme over focus

Check using a cross hatch pattern: Lower contrast down while looking in the lenses, set brightness to 60. All three tubes should be lit evenly at 0 or close to it depending on cut off. See if the green is overdriven. Doug

I think he means when you adjust the focus a long way in each direction. (i.e. ramp the focus up and down)

On another note I think my tilt is messed up one of my friends (that thought he knew something) adjusted my tilt then forgot what it was set for. Is there anyway to know how to set it back I have never touched it since.

I believe I am having the same problem as you ... but with the green tube. I think my problem is due to the lens not focusing properly. Do you notice that it gets much thicker as you goto the side?
