it would be a good candidate to rip the tubes out if they are in good condition (unless the tubes are shorted)

there is a NEC 9PG PJ for sale ($100) but the unit "is NOT WORKING. It does power on, but the color tubes do not light up and a melting or burning smell comes from the unit upon powering up." would this be a good canidate to fix if the tubes are in good condition?

If you can see the tubes and they are good, it's worth the $100.00.

You might ask the seller to email you tube pics and a closer shot of the deflection board since HOT failures are common on these projectors and could explain the issues it has. Replacement deflection boards have sold on ebay for $30 so after shipping you could have a nice unit for under $300 if the tubes are good but don't forget the $70 remote.
