I have a NEC VR5 and have tried to connect an old vcr to it via input #2 (I believe).

This input is a composite BNC connector. So I ordered a cable from someone that put a regular coax connector on one end and a BNC connector on the other.

However, when switching to this input, I get No Signal (this happens to the two VR5s I have at home now - one is a return for pixel issues).

So I'm wondering if it has something to do with a setting on the TV or if I'm mistaken in my assumption that the VR5 can display a signal in this manner in the first place (for instance, I remember that TVs used to have the requirement of being set to channel 3 or 4 for the VCR to display).

Or if it's the cable, how can I go about testing this? I have a cheap little multimeter but what setting would I use to test the cable?

tks all,

Ty

I may mistaken but isn't the coax connector on an old VCR an RF (radio frequency connector).

The composite connector even on an old vcr should be an RCA type connector with a yellow insert.

I think what your trying to do is inject an modulated RF signal into your TV's composite input - I don't think that will work.

Does your VCR have a yellow RCA video output?

Addendum:

You should be aware that if it does, whereas the RF connections pass video plus audio, the composite connectors are only passing video. So you will need additional cables to pass audio. Typically RCA connectors that have red and white inserts. On a really old VCR there may only be one connector as it's mono not stereo. Some old VCR have both red and white RCA type connectors, but they are still just passing mono sound.
