I'm trying to run a NEC XG75 (rebadged as a Runco DTV-991) at 1280x720 @ 72 Hz (in 16:9), to make it look best with 24 fps film sources, but the projector is really unhappy with a 72 Hz sync. It'll sync up and show it, but the picture is fairly unstable and has an unacceptable amount of horizontal waver. If I change my scaler output to 60 Hz, most of the waver goes away (but honestly not all of it).

At 60 Hz, the waver is mostly unnoticeable, although it still shows in large sections of bright color, where it can be seen as rapidly moving horizontal bands of slightly altering brightness.

The horizontal waver is visible both on external material and on internally-generated test patterns. It's also there no matter what 72 Hz source generator I use. (And is still somewhat visible as described above no matter what 60 Hz source generator I use.)

Anyone got an idea what might be failing or is in need of adjustment here?

Thanks.
