I'm currently am a DirecTV subscriber and have the HD package, thus a HR-20 HD satellite receiver. Likewise, a cheap RCA dvd player that upscales. Lastly a Samsung LN-S3251d LCD monitor. Currently, I have no surround speakers and all audio is run through the television. I do have a 7:1 speaker package on order. Which means I 'need' to buy a A/V receiver!! My question is this, based on my circumstances, would one recommend an A/V receiver that upscales sources beyond 480p (i.e. to 720p, 1080i, 1080p?). Can I not accomplish what an A/V receiver of this sort does utilizing the satellite receiver's upscaler for SD television programing and the dvd player's upscaler for DVD programing. Would one anticipate any appreciable gain in quality of picture if upscaled through say a Yamaha or Denon A/V receiver with this capability?

My questions exactly too. Hopefully someone sheds some light. I have Dish Network HD package and A HD DVD player for movies. So i don't believe i'd benefit with the upscaling in the A/V receiver either. But maybe i'm wrong?

I saw no improvements on SD TV when using the Yamaha RX-V2700's deinterlacer/scaler.

Your monitor must deinterlace and upscale the input video signal when it does not match its native resolution. It might do a better job of that then the receiver you buy.

If you are planning on going with HDMI and want to use your receiver to switch video, and are using non HDMI sources you will want a receiver which can convert analog sources to HDMI. I do this with my Yamaha RX-V2700. I believe its manadatory with my receiver to turn on deinterlacing when I do this (480i -> 480p.) So you don't always have a choice of passing the signal through unmodifed.

Michael,

Thank you for the response, a quick additional question.

When you say no improvement to SD TV, had the signal previously been scaled by your satellite or cable television receiver or are you referring to the scaler in your television?

It did not matter how I set my options. The Panasonic always has to scale the image. There is no way to set the Yamaha to output 1024x780, so even if I turn on the Yamaha's scaler, the Panasonic will still have to scale the image to 1024x780.

EDIT:

Looking through the manual, maybe I can turn of deintelacing when converting component to HDMI. I will explore all the options this weekend again.

probably not.

In my opinion (and experience), I'm tired of dealing with pseduo-HD. My upscaling Denon DVD player doesnt do much for me, so I am just going on that premise that if it's not HD to begin with, I'd rather not deal with it.

With that said, just stick with a decent-prized receiver that has good sound processing and matches well with your speakers. That'll go a much longer way then a receiver with secondary features such as upconversion features.
