Hey there,


In my TV room I have a Onkyo RC360 but no speakers anymore. The stereo is mine but the speakers were my roommates and he just moved out. The speakers will be used for movies/football in a carpeted room that is 13' W (TV on this wall), 11' L and 9' ceilings. Looking to spend $200-$300 on a 5.1 system. I was looking at the Polk Audio RM705 as seen below. The local best buy has nothing good on display so I can't really test anything out. What do you guys recommend?

Hello Enyar, what type of speaker set up was there before your roomate left? Reason I asked is becuase if you really liked them then you may want to look into those as well.


Even thou the Polk system you listed may work I do believe you will be disapointed with its performance/sound they provide.


If you want to stich to a low dollar amount (as you have listed $200 to $300) you may want to look into these as they will have a better sound stage & powered sub IMO....

You could always check the local craigs list or ebay as well to find a better deal/set up too.

I agree with the idea of trying Craigslist and eBay.


I would also suggest going to a 3.1 system and busting you budget a bit. Get a BIC F12 for a sub and then:

Some BIC's might also work. You might also buy a two pairs of Energy CB-5's, using one of the four a center. Eventually, you could save up and get an Energy center channel and have a 5.1 system.

IMHO, these will make you happier in the long run than buying a low price system like you mentioned above.

With that budget I'd go for a 2.1/3.1 setup. Or a set of towers that can play low - like the Polk Monitor 50s or 60s - or Infinity Primus 253 or353 .

Thanks guys. The previous speakers were some basic Sony's that the guy has had forever. They sounded good and satisfied me but I am sure there was a lot of room for improvement. I looked into the ones you guys recommended, but I dont think I really have the room for a large set of tower speakers. I'm also kicking myself in the shins for not buying those Onkyo HT-540 when they were on sale at amazon for $165. I will start with a 3.1 setup for now, and then eventually get 2 more for 5.1. Any recommendations for a smaller speaker for the front 3? Something not floorstanding. I will look into the bic sub as I have heard good things about them too.

The CB-5's are pretty small, as are something like the Polk Monitor 30/40. Or some bookshelf BIC.

How do you feel about Polk Monitor 30's Series II for fronts, and polk RM7 for center and rears? Then whichever sub I can find on sale to go with it. I saw the RM7 center on sale for $45 and it looks like the RM7 satellites can be had for $60-80 a pair.

If you get the monitor 30s or 40s get the CS1 or CS2 center.

I would prefer you go with 2 pairs of Polk Monitor 30's and a CS1 center



The Rm7 center is only mention for being used with rm7.'s as front left and right


I started with a Polk rm6750 5.1 set which I felt sounded way better than the Polk Rm705. I then added Polk monitor 30's to the front and was somewhat satisfied for music but not for movies/tv so I bought the cs1 center and now I am completely 100% satisfied with my budget set up

To the OP: if you buy Polks I hope you like lots of treble. Every Polk I have listened to except their pricey stuff in the $X,XXX range sounded to me like the receiver's treble knob was turned almost all the way up, good for a movies dialog and SFX I guess but sucky for music imo.

They are never as bad as people make it seem.... You want lots of treble look at the Klispch Icon series, and even some Reference series they are even brighter.

Wait another week or so until the the MLT-2 goes on sale for $329. You get largers speakers and a 10" woofer for $50. Newegg puts the MLT-2 on sale quite often.

The RM7 center is too small for the Monitor 30. You need the CS1 center. With the price of the Monitor 30 around $84 I'd rather you get two pairs of those instead of the smaller RM7 satellites.


You'll be able to get two pair of Monitor 30s and CS1 center for about $235. I'd take those over the Onkyo speakers you saw on sale. Cherry or black are the same price.

Good advice. The RM bookshelf speakers aren't nearly as good as the Monitor bookshelf speakers.

Ok you guys talked me into the Monitor 30's with the CS1 center. My last question is about the center speaker, where are you guys putting this thing with a wall mounted TV? The speaker is huge and I have no cabinets or anything below my TV.

Thanks, I bought 4 Monitor 30's and the CS1 center. Im going with the buy now figure out install later plan. Now if only I could get you gurus to recommend a sub for ~$100...

Not really any good subwoofers under $100. For $150 you can get a Bic v1020, for $183 you get a Bic F12
