Need a new receiver

I am revamping my A/V system and I need a receiver that will do a 5.1 in my family room and 2 pair of speakers ( with volume controls ) to play music throughout the house. Please Help.

Need more info. What you've decribed would include a suggestion of just about everything out there.


First setup a budget. You said you needed 2 pair of speaker for a 5.1 system. Do you need a 5.1 system + 2 pair for the rest of the house? Do you need a center speaker also? Room size? Speaker Size, Floorstanding-satelite-bookshelf? Estimate what percentage will be used for music vs video? Lots of people here are willing to help with their experience and ideas and advice but we need something to go on. Any details you can think off at all.

I'm in a new house and currently have a 5.1 system with floorstand fronts (Speakerlab Das 5), Energy center and sub, and Jamo ceiling surrounds powered by a Denon AVR 97. I will eventually replace the fronts and center with JBL Studio L speakers. I also have 2 ceiling speakers upstairs and 2 speakers outside (both with volume controls) but they are not hooked up. I would like to connect everything to one receiver and I am leaning toward HK or Yamaha due to the fact that I can get these receivers for approx. 50% of msrp. Room size for the 5.1 is 14 x 16. The receiver will be used 75% video and 25% music.

I think you aren't getting a better response because almost everything you can get in the market nowadays does that. Short of listing every model of your preferred brands, HK and Yamaha - which is not really helpful obviously.


Have you listenend to any of them? And what did you not like about them that you have not bought one already?


now, if you want to play different source in the second room (for example, a CD thru digital input) at the same time as watching movie in the main room, that probably narrows down your choices somewhat

Not sure which models, maybe others can help you with that, though I think look for midrange receivers with two zones mentioned - they will do it if you connect the second source via analog.


I just read over on HTF that no receivers will do it for a digital connection.

I'm thinking of the Yamaha 2500, 2600 or the HK 435 or 635

which one did you listen to and liked better? Unless the Speakerlab Das 5s are atrociously difficult to drive, I think either one of those would work. How much you would like the sound of either is not something we can tell you!
