Hi everyone

In order to optmize my room, I'm wondering something about my subwoofer :

Would a thick carpet put In front of the subwoofer, be a bad or good thing ?

My two possibilities :

A

B

Thank you for your help

Are you talking about carpet on the wall behind the sub? If so, carpet will have no effect on the subwoofer frequencies. You need much thicker absorption to absorb frequencies with wavelengths measured in feet. For example, an 80 Hz wave has a wavelength of 14 feet. To absorb that, you need absorption that is at least 1/4 wavelength thick, or about 3.5 feet of absorption. An 80 Hz wave will laugh at 1" of carpet.

Carpet underneath the sub will de-couple the sub from the floor somewhat. If the sub is vibrating against the floor, you can reduce that with carpet.

Thanks craig for your answer

I made a mistake in my previous message

Actually, the carpet is on the floor, just in the front of the subwoofer.

Like this :

So, which is the best choice ?

Thanks for your help

The only way the carpet is going to make ANY difference is if you place the sub ON the carpet. And even at that all it will do is decouple the sub from the floor. If the floor is hardwood you might want to look into products like the subdude, and place your sub on it.

The rug/carpet aside you may want to determine the "better" sub placement location. That is, one option you have is near the middle of the front, the other appears to be more towards the corner of the room. There are tons of threads on this but perhaps "crawling for bass" is in your future
Basically setting the sub in the "sweet spot" where you sit to watch moves and play (repeating) bass. You then crawl in the front to determine the "best sound". Having an SPL meter would help as well.

One of the honchos at a subwoofer company recently said in a post that the ideal location for DUAL subwoofers is right beside your main speakers.

There is also a formula that deals with the distance from the side walls. This one works with one subwoofer (located on the front wall).

I know Ed Mullen from SVS has spent a great deal of time working with subwoofer placement. SVS is usually willing to help with a little technical assistance.

The OP might even send Ed Mullen a Private Message. I would be surprised if Ed didn't respond (when he has time).

Are you asking about the carpet or the placement. The carpet will have no effect on the sub. The placement will have a *huge* effect on the sub. Corner placement will give you the most output because it will maximally excite the room modes. The right-middle wall position will give you less output, but possibly smoother response.

The carpet will reduce the early reflection off the floor from about 1 kHz up. This is a good thing.

The best thing you can do in your room would be to move your seating off the back wall. In your current LP, you'll get nasty mid and high frequency reflections of the back wall, plus boomy, resonant bass.

as others have already said, the carpet won't help or hurt the bass. i'd try the sub in both locations and see which sounds better to you. i like to have my sub placed like in your "option A", in between the mains. sounds better for music in my room.
