I received word from a JVC authorized service center today that my awesome and "perfectly featured for what I need" RX-DV5 DVD/AM/FM receiver is dead and the parts needed to fix it are no longer available. This after a several month search and trying to source alternate components. This sucks. While it may not have been the "best" out there, it was super quick and easy to use. I coudl use it to watch movies in our entertainment room, and my kids (4 and 6 years old) could use it to play back their kids CDs without having to go into a menu or anything.

Best of all, it was "smart." For instance, if I was listening to the radio previously, all they had to do was click the "play" button and the radio would turn itself on, change to the CD player, and begin playing the CD. So simple that my, at the time, 3 year old mastered it. No touch screen, no menus. Dedicated buttons.

Plus, I could change the crossover frequency, adjust bass & treble, subwoofer volume, speaker distance, surround sound mode, etc. Optical and coax digital in and out, component video to my projector, and a lot more. It was technically capable, but also easy to use. (sigh.)

It died due to a lightning strike and insurance will cover replacement for identical service. and while I'd love, love, love an all in one like my JVC was, when I started looking, I was stunned to find that this type of device has all but disappeared. The few models I can find are all old, outdated, or under-featured.

There's the nicely speced, but long discontinued and very poorly reviewed Denon S-5BD

There's the Harmon Kardon BDS 5 SO -> which is now the BDS 7772

But I already have in-wall speakers. So I'd just be using the receiver and the sub.

I'd need to convert the HDMI out to component for my existing projector.

Here's the BDS 5, the core of that system.

There's the Yamaha BRX-610, which is pretty close to what I want, but lacks even basic bass & treble controls.

I'm open to suggestions for receiver solutions now that the insurance requirement that we try and fix it first has been fulfilled.

The models I'm finding are under $1000. So I'd liek to keep with that. While Insurance is supposed to cover it, I'm sure "like service" does NOT mean I can go get some high end monoblocks, etc.
