Need a sub recommendation

896 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  thumperxr69
Hi everybody - I'm looking for a sub to go with my new home theater. I'm not looking for earth shattering volume levels, in fact, i probably rarely will get to listen to this the way I want :) However, for most things, I want it to go low and strong. Probably a mix of 50-50 music-movies, but if I had to choose, I would pick music first. Budget of around 1000-1500. I don't want to go too much higher, but will at least consider it I can find the right sub.

Some of the nice-to-haves:

EQ - to deal with any strange dips or peaks

remote

I would like to be able to walk around the thing in less than an hour :) (i.e. space/WAF is sort of a factor)

My room dimentions are about 15.5' x 21' x 7.5', with about a 750 cu. ft vaulted ceiling over half of the room (total of about 3300ish cu. ft)

So far, I'm interested in:

Velodyne SPL-1200R

Axiom EP-500

Anything else I should look at?

To sum up: Music, low, strong, but not bring-the-house down loud.

Edit:

This will be used with the Energy RC-70 mains, center, and surrounds. Denon 3806 receiver.

You definitely want to include a price range you are looking at. Just look through these forums and you will see SVS, HSU, velodyne mentoned quite often. Try and audition some first hand. Educate yourself.... :D

Take your time and make an informed decision and these forums are a great place to start...

good luck

Great suggestions, I would also add the Earthquake MKV-12 and MKV-15 to your short list - they are very impressive subs that don't get the press they deserve.

I apologize I didn't see it. You have 1000-1500

I think one of the best sets for the money would have to be:

SBS

SBS on audioholics

Just do a search on this set and you should see lots of hits. I would go this way if I have more room (and a basement :( )

I myself will be going a little more budget for HSU Ventriloquist surrounds and HSU subwoofer (STF-2).

I belive thats just for the sub he has speakers
So, between the SPL-1200R, the HGS-15X, and the earthquake - which would you pick? I like the EQ of the 1200R, but I could always add a seperate EQ later, right?

Always get the "biggest" sub you can afford, so go with the HGX-15 or the EQ MkV15 and get Velodyne SMS-1 or Behringer BFD later if you feel the need.

I've had my Velo 1200R for about a month and it's a great sub that does what you are looking for. My room is 17 x 28 x 9.

It really shines on music. The low bass guitar notes are really notes and not just thuds. I use the eq settings and the remote volume a lot so they are not just marketing features you will never use. Remember you need to have line of sight or emitters for the remote to work. Your infrared remote won't work if it can't see the sub. The remote also has a mute so you can hear what the source sounds like with and without the sub.

I've always had a vented/ported sub before. After hearing the tight bass you get from a sealed system I wouldn't go back.

I would buy this sub again. In fact, I'm going to buy another one to either use in the same room or if overkill, I'll use it in another room. I couldn't get one immediately as they are on backorder from the distributor.

Apparently this is one of the hottest selling subs right now. Good luck.
