I am planning a room in our basement to be used solely for home theatre setup. I am thoroughly confused as to what to do. Would absolutely love a large viewing screen but am unsure of the projectors and screens As there seem to be so so many choices. I think it would be easier to own and wall mount a TV but can’t find any TVs over 100 inches that won’t cost me the price of a Small car. I can get maximum 120 inch projector screen on wall if I go that route. What would you recommend or do if you had a blank space to work with. Walls of the room are dark grey, black out shades haven’t been installed yet. Still debating on 5.1 vs this thing they quoted me for 7.2.4 atmos…. All so confusing

Here’s a link to some good information. There’s a free interactive 3D design tool near the bottom of the page. It is a good idea to think through all the details and plan everything for a great theater experience. There is a lot to consider, but with patience and the desire to learn, you will be rewarded. This forum is a great place to ask questions. There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here that like to help.

You haven’t given us the details for your room yet. Dimensions, number of seats, budget, etc.

What is your price range / budget for the whole thing? How big is your room? How many rows of seating? If your room is fully light controlled, I'd suggest a JVC NX5 for a projector that can light up a 120" screen easily, true native 4k, has the best black floor out of others in its range, and has built in HDR tone mapping. Depending on how many rows your seating will be, 5.1.4 may be plenty you may not need 7.1.4.

Hi!
Thanks for the advice
The room is 25x14 ceiling are 8 feet and 9 feet in the recessed center.
planned for three tiers but frontrow may be too close to screen as it is 120 inches away
Would love to have 4 seats on top tier and three on second tier. If possible maybe two seats on first tier of boy too close.

here’s a link to a site that has a lot of information on everything about projectors:

Projector central screen size guide

If you typically prefer sitting near the center of the full sized cinemas, this might be helpful for you. Everyone has their preferences, the author of the guide and I suggest borrowing a projector and temporarily setting it up for the screen size you want projected on the wall. And then try out various seating distances to find out what works for you.

Thank you so
Much
It’s all very much to take in
Especially when I know nothing about it
I’m still shaking my head over the choices in seating

120 inches away from a 120 inch screen is not too far away. In fact, that's where you'd probably want your middle row. It's not even close enough to benefit from 4K resolution. To benefit from 4K resolution you need to be inside 1 screen width away from the screen. Otherwise the pixels are just way too small. I'd plan the main seat to be like 7-8 feet from a 120", the middle row like 12-13 feet back, the last row like 17-18 feet back. Then if it were me, I'd make the main seat the front row in that environment. Also if your room is that big perhaps a 150" is more appropriate. A JVC can still light that up ok.

If you want to learn about how to design a home theater this is a great place to be. However if it is all too much for you, then a reputable and qualified designer might be worth paying for. Here is one that I would not hesitate to recommend:

HTE Pro Layout

And here is a thread in the dedicated theater section that might have some other suggestions along these lines:
