need advice for attic antenna

1278 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Hoggie
I have been reading another thread here I got a little confused. I want to install an antenna in my attic for local hd channels. My wife does not prefer to have one outside the house, and dish does not offer my locals. I live in area code 35405 and have a two story house with basement. Most of my locals seem to be located fairly close in the same direction. I saw where someone suggested a 4228, but when I looked it up I was not sure if I could use in attic. Most of local are going to be, well here they are. What do you guys recommend for this. Thanks

Between low power digital stations and distance from towers, Tuscaloosa OTA -- especially from the attic -- seems to have real problems. My mantra of "use a 4228" may not work there and once again, I can't believe I'm saying that.

I'd suggest go to the Birmingham thread -- see Post #2990 -- and check on arty's situation I believe is his name.

You have a digital ABC station broadcasting on VHF 5. The CM 4228 won't work for that station. I get a lot more digital stations than you showed in your list for your zip code by plugging in 300' for the antenna height which is a useful step to get a more complete list of stations you MIGHT be able to get. You should enter your exact address and an antenna height of 100' or 150' into antennaweb.org and see what digital stations show up. Antennaweb is very conservative on digital reception, so adding an antenna height of 50' to 150' can make up for that.

Two of the station are listed as TBD which means that they may not be on the air yet. You are around 48 miles from the stations in Birmingham. With a station on VHF 5, you should be looking at a conventional medium to long range VHF & UHF antenna. Give it a try in the attic, but you may to move it to the roof.

I baught some rabbit ears just for giggles and tried them out. With very much suprise I found out that with the proper placement around the house (outside on the ground and on my deck) I was able to get alot of channels. I got ABC which I thought I would not be able to get. That was pointing it at 21 degrees. So if I can get that on top of my deck I was hoping in my attic I could get more. The attic is another 20 or so feet in the air.
I would be willing to bet your rabbit ears will work just fine, if you are close enough to the stations. I use a terk55 located in my attic and I get all the digital and analog broadcasts in the area. The Terk55 is an indoor/outdoor and is very sleek looking. Give it a try.
