Need Advice for NAS

Hi friends,

I know this is a little of topic, but the expertise here is substantial....

I'm still running Windows Home Server V1.0, (don't laugh..it still works!) and think it may finally be time to replace it. I'm thinking that I need a NAS, mostly for PC backups and storage of all the digital stuff that accumulates over time. Data security is prime, but I'd probably also use it to stream some media. I have boxes of HDDs, up to 2TB that have been collected over time, that I would like to re-use. I'm thinking more than two drive units, so I can do a Raid config that provides multiple copies.

I've looked at Synology, Drobo and others but would appreciate some guidance from folks who've 'been there.'

Thanks!

If you worry about data offline backup is the only "solution" hence RAID has little value (to my thinking). I'd throw all the drives in a PC (forget NAS per se) and use it as a server... your pick of OS. Or replace all of the small drives with a couple of larger ones and use a low-end single board computer like an ODROID or the new Raspberry pie (finally fast enough to use for online storage...) as a server. Create a top level directory for the data you are "worried" about and simply backup that directory and keep a copy offline. Typical media and such why bother backing up (unless you want to purchase additional drives) as it can be relatively easily duplicated.

I used to be a big NAS fan until I used them for several years and found often they only give one a sense of security. Especially when you "hang out" at their forums and see the ongoing issues. Such as deleting a volume when you think you are deleting its latest Snapshot. :) Now for pure storage why not... although other alternatives often provide better solutions including the power to support various network apps.

That's basically what WHS was/is....an old PC with a single system drive and a bunch of HDDs. Nice OS/interface, and pretty reliable. Easy to recover failed client PC hard drives, and automatic backups every night. Each server archive disc was also non-crypted, so it could be read by simply using a HDD cheater and copying over saved files.
I built my own NAS. I picked up intel cpu and motherboard, some ram and then off eBay an older LSI 8 drive raid adapter and loaded up 8 x 4tb drives raid 6 for a total of 22tb usable. Been rock solid for years, I need to start thinking about new 8tb drives as space is getting tight. The LSI adapter can be co figured to scan drive for errors and email you, which I do every week. Every Tuesday it scans drives for sector issue then on Wednesday it crawls the raid logical volume for parity errors.
I like QNAP.

Easy to use, many models with various levels of performance, and first rate support with Teamviewer sessions if you're stuck with something unusual.

I have 2 1677X, and with a 40G QSFP+ connection, I get 1500 Mbs read & 1000 Mbs write speed. A bit excessive for most I must say.

Second the QNAP. I have a basic TS-251+ w/ 8Gb and 2-4Tb - RAID 1. Just hanging out as a DOS drive and DNLA for the ROKU app on some basic BestBuy Sharp TVs. The DOS drive is as a file server for basic PC stuff and the music source for a RuneAudio Network Player on a Raspberry PI.

I have a new Synology DS1019+ with 5x 8TB drives in RAID 5 running PLEX w/ Plex Pass. The DS auto backs up all my media content to an older Qnap TVS-682T. I had thought about using the Qnap as it also has HDMI out (direct to receiver), but the newer DS outperformed the TVS. I run the PLEX app on my AppleTV 4K and the movie streaming has been flawless. Not a fan of Drobo - but Synology has it's own hybrid RAID, similar (and better performing) to Drobo.
