I need a decent budget universal player. I don't want to spend more than $200, but I'm willing go higher for the right product. Niether my reciever (Pioneer VSX-816) or my current television has HDMI connections, so it needs to work well without it.

I am interested in DVD, CD, DVD-A, and SACD. I would also like it to upsample.

Thanks!!

I've been very pleased with the audio quality of my Oppo 970 via the 5.1 analog jacks. The video is very good, also, and it apparently can upconvert via component with an "unofficial" firmware mentioned in the 970 thread.

Not sure if it's actually "universal", but it'll play most terrestrial formats.

I was ready to pull the trigger on the Oppo 970, but started reading complaints about a lack of detail in the highs and weak bass. Also, I heard the 970 isn't very good with projectors (which I'm considering). Can anyone comment about these concerns?

On the other hand, I believe I can afford older Marrantz and Pioneer Elite (45a?) players, or maybe go with the newer budget Elite.

Thanks!!
