Need advice on cables.

413 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  dssturbo1
I need some cables to hook all of my equipment up however I don't know what to get.

I have a DVD player, SDTV and a computer I would all like to hook up to an Onkyo receiver.

Now, the DVD player I bought came with A/V cables. The only problem is that they are like 3ft long. I need A/V cables that are at least 20ft long. Do they make those?

Next, which cables do I use to hook up the DVD player to the receiver?

My TV has S-Video if that matters.

monoprice.com carries cables in lengths up to 100ft in most cases.

use what connections you have available, visual quality for analog connections goes from component (best) to s-video (better) to composite (good) to rf (not so good)
So after doing some reading it appears that component video cables are better than composite and s-video cables. Does that seem to be right?
Oh ok you just answered my question. Thank you.
I went to bluejeanscable.com and calculated Component video cables that were 16 ft long - $70! S-Video 16ft was $46. How big is the difference between these two when hooked up to a SDTV?
Likely very little difference when viewed on an SDTV, possibly not even noticable depending on the tv. S-video separates luminance from color in the video signal, while component further separates the color signal into red/blue.

Bluejeanscable does indeed have excellent cables, but a 25foot component from monoprice.com is $10.62 and a 25 foot s-video is $6.90. I have always been very satisfied with my orders from monoprice.
Thanks, I'm going to get all of my cables from monorpice, they seem to have better prices.

My TV only has white/red and yellow connections. Can I still get the component cables? If so which color goes where? They are green red and blue.

Which is a better audio cable for connecting a DVD player to a receiver?

I would opt for optical cable. The first link you posted.

the R/W audio and the Y for video are the rca composite connections and you should also have a s-video connection which you should use for best video quality.

if you tv set does not have the red/ green/ blue component inputs then no you dont need those.
