As the title states I need to build a media server and htpc and I need advice. I want to build a server that can maybe hold 6 had and be able to be accessed from 4 different locations and play HD media without Sutter or having problems. Also I was going to run those power wire things (sends data through the outlet) from downstairs to upstairs. Let me know what you all have in mind...want to be as cost effective as possible.

1. Want to play common mkv at 720p
2. Whichever is the most common mkv HD files
3. 5.1 Surround Sound
4. Most Common?
5. As cost effective as possible
6. Because the server will be downstairs and it is a rental
7. Will store and share the media to other devices

You can build an unraid server for storage. Power line ethernet might work, but not 100% this will depend how good your electrical wiring is. My house was built in the late 1980's, and power line didn't work with high bitrate BD movies. It didn't have any issues with SD movies.
I stream to three different locations at the same time without any issues. However, my whole network is hard wired with Cat6 cable. I use a Dune D1, PCH-A210 and a laptop as media devices and two android phones.
