So I recently picked up a Denon AVR-X3000 for ~550 on eBay refurbished. Now I've been in a long, arduous research struggle trying to find a good speaker system to go with it. I would probably go with a 5.1 setup even though I have a 7.2 receiver. And, without a doubt I want the rear speakers to be wireless. I'm looking to spend $7-800 So as you can imagine the search hasn't been easy. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

My suggestion would be to get two nice towers or two decent bookshelfs and a good sub and hold off until you can afford the rest.

A fairly good subwoofer costs $700-800.

Your price range is very limiting; you can't go very far with that.

There is one fairly decent starter system that you can get, though; the Martin-Logan MLT-2 system. Amazon has the discontinued version now for only $350. That is a very good deal for the money. It was a good deal when it was $600.

The Jamo S426 HCS3 5.0 speaker system is also at Amazon for $369; another very good deal. add a Polk PSW505 subwoofer for $240 and you will have a fairly decent setup.

You won't find much better for under $800.

I got that Jamo 426 system for $129 at Amazon.. and at that price it is not really that good, at $369 it is definitely not a good deal, I returned it.

i would get the AJ Pioneers before that.

But this is much better...

Oh these are actually good? I thought they'd diminish the sound quality.

Any wireless speaker you buy is going to have the same thing basically.

It's 20x14. The tv is going on a 7ft wall and the couch will be 11ft away. I enjoy movies if that's what you're asking.

That was what I was asking, thanks.

That is not a huge space, but having the Cambridge towers might be nice.

I agree with what a couple others have said, $700-800 for a 5.1 setup with wireless surrounds, you will never be completely satisfied with it. "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten" Get a decent pair of fronts and a sub for now, Arx A1b's and the SVS PB-1000 was a good suggestion, then gradually add on a center and surrounds as you get more money.

I would agree AND disagree. Agree, get a 2.1 on that budget. Disagree on towers! Get a quality bookshelf pair (ascend acoustic 170s, perhaps) and a decent sub. The ascend are 350/pr and that would leave you 350-400 for a sob. If you can stretch the budget any, the svs pb1000 is a really good sub for 500 dollars.

bookshelves will be fine, usually at the same price point the bookshelves can be better than towers. When you crossover at 80hz to a sub that negates the lower frequency cutoff of a tower.

Just remember to include stands in your budget, then again the cost of the stands can raise the cost to a better pair of towers.

bookshelf

+1 Also FWIW, the Ascend CBM-170's are currently on sale for $300 a pair. Both those and the SVS pb-1000 would be solid, long term purchases
