Need advice on upgrading

345 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Knucklehead90
I have a 26 year old Rotel tuner/preamp and amplifier with multi rooms wired for speaker pairs with impedance matching volume controls. Amplifier lost right ch output. I am torn between buying separates i.e integrated amp, tuner or just going with a receiver for simplicity and cost saving like the Yamaha R-N803 Network Stereo Receiver. I like the WiFi, Bluetooth, streaming capabilities. Also I need the ability to play from my laptop my Itunes library CD collection through the system. I do that now by using the earphone jack on the laptop to RCA input on the Rotel tuner/preamp. Maybe with Wifi or bluetooth capability I could do it differently.
I do know that separates would get me closer to the audio quality I would like but my budget is tight. Another consideration and I realize this is a 2ch thread but there are comparably priced AVR's with maybe better audio specs. I would then be inclined to build out a home theater setup but mainly a 2 ch user.
My current speakers are low end hopefully to be upgraded in the future.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

What about a NAD Recevier?

You get the best of both worlds.

7.1 possible expansion while having a great 2 channel base and plenty of bells and whistles.

Interesting. What model are you referring to?

The NAD T758.

If you’d like possible expansion to 11.2, the T777 comes with processing for that many channels.

I was just looking at those on the NAD website. On first look they seem pricey. But any further discussion on those I should probably take over to those forums.
Any further recommendations on 2 ch systems?
I almost went with a preamp/amp combo for 2 channel. But every combo still needed a DAC, and I needed one that could switch digitl sources. That meant one more black box, a deal breaker. I compromised and I'm very happy I did. It doesn't feel like a compromise at all. The combo Yamaha integrated and the Emotiva DAC work very well together.
The Yamaha A-S1000 integrates into the HT setup very nicely. It has direct amp input, in that mode it is nothing more than a stand-alone amp that the AVR controls, volume & tone all controlled by the AVR. FWIW the AVR has very decent sound quality and the A-S1000 was an added mainly because I got it dirt-cheap second hand. I do think it drives the speakers better than most AVRs can. YMMV
The cheapest integrated amp that I'm aware of is the Onkyo A-9150. It also has digital inputs, which my Yamaha int. amp lacks. But it makes up for that in other areas.
