I am in the preliminary stages of my research on buying a new amp for my home. I have a 50" panasonic G15 plasma and I have my high end computer connected to it via HDMI cable. I do not have a blu-ray player but with the computer I have not yet really needed one. I have Shaw Direct HD satellite as my content provider and will be upgrading my 505 HD receiver to a new PVR 630.

I want suggestions for an amp. I'm not fully up to speed yet on exactly what I want but I know that I want it to have internet access not just the limited youtube, netflix access but full blown access (is this even possible) and also allow streaming from the computers on my home network.

What options should I consider when buying an amp preferably with a $700 budget? I'm looking at the Denon AVR-3808CI amp? What are feeling on this amp? I'm also looking at Onkyo models because they have a iPod app to control it which I find interesting. Please feel free to comment or give me your alternate suggestions. Thanks in advice for all your advise.

You are looking for an AVR, not an amp. Look at one of the newer models with networking and you should be good to go. You could also get one of the older models like the 3808CI and it may play along with your computer. With this model and what you are wanting to do my suggestion is to pm either members batpig and/or jdsmoothie. These guys seem to be the Denon specialist on this site and can give you the answers you need. If not that model they will be able to suggest something in your price range that will work from Denon. Good luck and hope this helps.

thanks for the input. What about the denon AVR-3311CI? Its a little over my budget but it looks to have what I want. What are the major differences with last years model AVR-2311CI?

Well I checked out the AVR-3311CI and that seems to be what I'm looking but its a little over my budget. Are there any other manufacturers that I should look at that has good multimedia capabilities that might be more in my $700 budget?

You might check out the Yamaha's 667,A800 to see if they will do what you want. There's also the Pioneer 1120 that will fit in your budget. Onkyo 808. If you don't need 3D check out last years offerings. The Denon 3310, Yamaha 765/1065/2065. Pioneer Elites will also fit in your budget depending on the model. The 32/33 from them should work. Did you look at the Denon 2311's price online to see if it will do what you want and fit in your budget?

Look at the new Marantz avr's. They are the same company as Denon. The 6005 and 5005 are in your budget. Don't forget that you can get a better deal than MSRP. Maybe hold out for a used 7005. Watch Audiogon for slightly used Marantz and Denon offerings.

Thanks for the heads up on the Marantz models. The model I would want (7005) with the options I want is still out of my range. That being said of the 3 following AVRs can you guys comments on the strengths and weaknesses

ONKYO TXNR808

Marantz 7005

Denon AVR-3311CI

Of the 3 the ONKYO is the cheapest.

NOt to flame Onkyo, but IMHO, Denon and Marantz are in a better league than Onkyo. I say this because I have owned a few of the Onkyo AVR's. I owned the TX nr805, TX NR 875 and the TxSR905. The most reliable of the three was the 805. Both the 875 and 905 had to be returned in their first 30 days due to quality issues.

Any manufacturer can have quality issues. I am partial to Denon as I have had better experience quality wise with Denon products. I currently own the Denon AVR5308CI. I've had it for over two years with no issues. Denon keeps it current with frequent firmware updates and upgrades. I think that kind of support for products is what sets Denon apart from other mainstream consumer electronic companies.

I made a similar search earlier this year and I ended up going with a 3808CI myself, so I wouldn't discount it. However, if you can stretch to get the Marantz 7005 I would do that.

If the Denon 3311/991 interests you you might like to look at the previous model 3310/990.

With Denon the last two (3311) or one (991) digit in the model number indicate the model year, so you can be assured that the previous 3310/990 are 2010 year models.

The differences are in details and the 'old' model can be had at very good prices. (I bought a 990 in October, 2010 for $579. and they went lower than that during the 'black Friday' wingding.

I think Denon brings out it's new models in late February or early March so it won't be long before the new model 3311 you buy now will be last year's news to the 3312.
