Need bookshelf Speakers, Suggestions welcome

All and Any:

I've decided that I'll start building my Home Theater setup with a pair of bookshelf speakers and a sub.

For the sub, I've decided to go with the SVS PB12-NSD (I've just read too many nice things about this sub on these forums, I just couldn't settle for anything less..)

As for the speakers/Rec, I'm still undecided. I'll probably end up just getting a receiver to match the speakers, something cheaper (2-channel). I'll most likely be upgrading the receiver in the future to something really nice $$$, so receiver seleciton isn't what I'm stuck on.

As for bookshelf speakers, I would like to spend around the range of $300-$400/pair.

With my system only consisting of only a sub and bookselves, I'm concerned that the midrange will be lacking, so I would prefer something that is stronger in the midrange. Basically, something that can reach low enough to somewhat match the depths a full tower can provide. I understand that with bookshelves alone, I'll never truely match the lower midfrequency body that a full tower can provide, but I'd like to be as close as possible.

I'm a sucker for a nice warm sounding speaker, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (also, I'm a bit of a bass-head, nothing quite stirs me up in the loins like a clean low bass vibration..so i'm hopin the SVS will help me out there)

I can go new or used, doesn't really matter.

Some possiblities,

Polk Monitor 40 or Monitor 30

Polk RTi4

B&W 600 Series (something within the price range)

Klipsch RB-51

PSB Image B 15

TIA,

Nick

(ps, what's the difference between a Surround Speaker and a Monitor?)

Why?

Have you owned any? if so,

Which?

What did you have them hooked up to?

What did you use them for?

Have you previewed any others?

Why do you prefer the Axioms?

Definitive SM350's if you can squeeze a bit the 450s

I have owned the 450s fora while before upgrading and a friend of mine has the 350s and both are beautiful.

Roomsize is the determinant, smaller room get the 350s as the 450s will get muddled in a smaller room. My room is a bit bright so I didn't have issues with the 450s.

Both blend very easily witha subwoofer and produce so sonic detail ubknownst to most bookshelf speakers.

If you had'nt bought the SVS you could have used the money to get a pair of Power Monitor 700's which each has a 8in 250w RMS powered LF driver.

Take your time and audition the

Definitive

SM350

SM450

Have a look at the Sonus Faber Concertinos, beautiful looking, beautiful warm sound, handmade Italians wrapped in leather.

I managed to find a pair in your price range, you should also.
Polk Audio Monitor 40. Awesome speaker. I have them for fronts and they sound really good for 2-channel music especially with that behemoth SVS sub you have
Has everyone besides eddie forgotten already that the person is looking for warm sounding speakers.

I'm not sure about the sound of svs's sbs line but I do know that the onix xls has a warm presentation. Also I believe paradigm offers a warmer sound, I forget off hand the model of their inexpensive bookshelf (titan???). Oh yeah Energy C1 or C3s have been described as warm but I think the xls sounds better and others have voiced the same opinion. Hope some of this helps.

If you would consider DIY, then you could get an excellent speaker for that much money.
Era has the Design 4's & 5's, very smooth fantastically enveloping, imaging is fantastic. I would put them up against anything in their class. They are getting great reviews.
Home Theater Direct (HTD), just bought the LVLIII's and like them alot and they look good and are reasonably priced
You could get the PSB Image 25's for around $400.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys,

I think I've narrowed it down to only a couple now.

From reading up on all the above mentioned speakers,

the Onix xl-s Bookshelf Loudspeakers really caught my attention; although, there was not very many user reviews on these forums. If anyone owns a pair of these, feel free to shoot me your opinion.

The second speaker which i've been watching closely is the PSB Image B25.

Being twice as expensive as the Onix pair, does one really get twice the speaker? From what I've read, the PSB has a fuller soundstage with more accurate highs.

Now does that mean that they wouldn't sound as warm as the xl-s? Or are they just as warm, but aslo provide a more hearty portion of detail in the upper frequency spectrum?

To me the PSB's are not a warm speaker at all, very detailed. They sound similar to Paradigm's.
i demoed B25s and they sounded very colored and forward to me in the midrange. i would go with the x-ls. energy c-3 is also a good speaker, you could pick up a pair of those on audiogon for around $225. probably not as warm as the onix, but they sound fantastic for the money.
Just so ya know I checked out the Onix XLS, here are the Definitive SM350's specs in relation

Dimensions: 6-15/16" W x 9-11/16" D x 10-11/16" H

Frequency Response: 26 Hz — 30 kHz

Driver Complement:

5-1/4" cast-basket polymer coned bass/midrange driver with a 8" pressure-driven subwoofer

1" pure aluminum dome tweeter

Nominal Impedance: Compatible with 4 — 8 ohms

Rec. Assoc. Amplification: 20 — 180 watts

Efficiency: 90 db

Finish: Gloss Black/Gloss White/Gloss Golden Cherry MSRP:$249ea.

I know you can talk a dealer down to your price range. The other great thing is Definitive uses the same type of tweeter throughout their offerings so no matter what you get next or upgrade to the voicing will be perfect across the board.

NHT Classic series will give you sex. It will also rock your world. Just put up a bit more dough; no problem though, good sex is not cheap.
