Need cable management help

Hey everyone, Im new here, both to home owning and AVS. I need help with getting my cables hidden for my new lcd hdtv. It is a 40" LNT4061F Samsung. Great picture, and ive already set some of the color options and what not ive found on this forum. Anyways, my question is whether or not I can run wires behind the wall in the chimney area by the flue. Im worried that the heat could damage the cables or start a fire. Evidently there is something against code on how my fireplace is built, and the repair guys are coming tomorrow to fix it (free of course, part of the contract).

If I cannot runt he cables behind the wall in that area, what would be a good alternative option?

Thanks everyone. Attached are pictures of the tv/cables needing to be hidden and the fireplace in the attic.

Thanks again

I'd get a decent stand and move the TV next to the fireplace. There's no need to place it up there. Above the fireplace should be the absolute last resort. You have other options. Additionally, if it's not too late, once you move it and put it at the appropriate viewing height, you'll want a larger TV. Unless you're only sitting 5 feet or so away, 40" is probably too small.

Are those Bose speakers?
Yeah, i knew i would catch some flack about the tv above the fireplace, but my wife and I like it there. I also wanted one a little larger, but the wife was complaining about costs...so this is what we decided on...

Also, it would not be able to go next to the fireplace, as the side door would open into the tv there. The door just barely misses the stand i have next to it for the hdtv receiver, xbox, wii, and whatnot.

yes those are some bose speakers, they are older, but still sound wonderful, the acustomass or whatever it is called is hidden behind where the door opens, so it is pretty nice...

I really just need to know if i can run the wires behind the fireplace or if i should buy a channel the could make two 90 degree turns down to the entertainment stand.

Thanks again guys.

Peace

I would guess that if you put a piece of metal conduit all the way to the right (away from the flue) and use CL2 or CL3 rated cables inside the metal conduit, you'd probably be OK. Ask the fireplace guy if he's aware of any rules. He should be able to tell you, as he has to know the code surrounding the placement of the flue.
If you are running electrical wire you will want wire rated atleast THHN. This is 90 Celcius. If your wire feeding the electrical is below thhn or your breaker is below thhn rated you are violating code. I can 100% garantee you do not have thhn rated cable in your home. Most homes are rated at TW or THW using 12-2/12-3 cable. Usually TW because its cheaper. Also, since it wont be up to code I would suggest if you are going to do it anyways keep the wire as close to the insulation as possible. Code states that combustible materials must be atleast 18" away from a chimmney flue or stove. So if your insulation in your home is closer, depenind on the year it was built you again wont comply with code. Just keep the electrical wires as far away from the flue as possible. Electrical fires account for only 6.6% of homes burning down the last time I checked. I have been out of the trade for a year, but the information above should help.

Good luck.
