Need good sub for $400-$450

Hey peeps, I need suggestions on a sub at around $400-$450 to go into a 5.1 home theater system.

It doesn't have to be super powerful as the actual home theater area will be quite small, just about 12' x 7'. That is not the size of the whole room, which is a tad over 19'x9', but it is the area which I want to have "enclosed" by the the speakers. Walls and ceiling are all made of concrete.

The receiver will be an Onkyo TX-SR604.

Although right now I'm leaning towards 4 x Infinity Primus 160 satellite speakers and an Infinity Primus C25 center, I'm still looking for suggestions on speakers too, here's my speaker thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=786355

Thanks all.

PS. What do you guys think about the DIY DAYTON TITSK-10K 10" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT?

You can can pickup a HSU VTF-1 for $409.00 includes shipping. This sub is amazing I now truely have that theater like bass that I was looking for. This sub is very powerful and hits clean and hard. Its more that enough for my 2100 cu ft room.
I am interested in HSU's STF-2, but since I live in Puerto Rico, I can't calculate the shipping price on site. I'm waiting for their reply on how much would the shipping be.

SVS is out of the question since their shipping prices for PR are ridiculous. Way more than the actual shipping cost. Hope they fix it.
Is the shipping quote to PR per the website, or did you actually contact them?

I don't see why they couldn't fix that for you.

I contacted them. It seems that that's what they charge for shipping.

Two alternatives you should might that would often be overlooked:

The Klipsch Sub12 (not the Sub10) is available at HHG and BB and lists at about $500 though I have seen it sell for as little as $360. It plays deep and loud with very good sound quality, definitely a sleeper in the Klipsch line and among low cost subs. This sub will sound better than many subs listing up to $1000.

Another often overlooked sub is the Martin Logan Dynamo. This is a superb sound quality sub which intergrates exceptionally well with mains, and has very good SAF due to its small footprint, and unusually good fit and finish for this price range. It can be purchased at $550, a little above your price point, but a sub that will be a keeper, and will be up to the sound quality of any mains you are likely to purchase. Works great in small to medium rooms.

I'll check out the Martin Logan, thanks.

Edit: Ok, I'm having trouble finding where to buy the Martin Logan Dynamo. What e-stores carry it? They don't seem to sell directly at us.martinlogan.com. Also, where can I find a list of ML authorized retailers?

As for the Klipsch, there's no BB in PR, and what's HHG?
Martin Logan is not sold internet direct; only through dealers. Many of the dealers are HT installation professionals, and have to travel to remote installations, so it may not be a problem for them to get one to you, or for you to pick one up from them. The dealer locator is on the left margin of most any page on the ML site; fill in "zip code" and click "Find a Store". Call the nearest dealers who will work with you.

HHG is HH Gregg and may be a regional chain; you may or may not have any in your area.

Another option you might consider that will give you exceptional results and sound quality is to buy a 12" servo kit from Rythmik Audio. This can then be used with a prebuilt 2 cubic foot subwoofer cabinet from Parts Express. If you can use a jig saw and a screw driver, thats all you need. If you are handy with woodworking you can save a bit and build the enclosure yourself. Search in the DIY section on Rythmik for more details if you aren't already familiar with this option. Brian Ding with Rythmik is well regarded and I have found him to provide excellent support.

Naa, I don't have a jig saw, nor any tools to do woodwork. I could drill holes in wood or dremel, you know that sort of stuff, but not make an enclosure from scratch. Thanks anyway.

Ya, I'm really interested on the HSU STF-2. Next business day, I'm emailing them again.
good luck.
HSU replied, shipping to PR is just $94! So for now I'm going with the STF-2. I just don't think I'll be able to notice such a difference worth paying an extra $200 for the PB10. Maybe I'll go with the VTF? Not sure yet.
