I am new to AV stuff but pretty good with computers. I am setting up a home theater PC (Dell XPS420) which has an ATI HD 2600 XT video card. The video card has an embeded sound card and can pass audio and video throught the DVI port by using the included HDMI adapter. I am connecting it to a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver via HDMI. My problem is that the reciever is not playing the audio from the PC. The picture looks fine. If I connect the PC directly to the TV (Sony KDL-46W3000) it plays the video and audio perfectly, so I know the video card is configred properly. Every other device that I have connected to the receiver (HD Cable Box, DVD and Wii) all work fine for video and audio.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get the audio to play on the receiver?

Thanks

Unfortunately Ken, it won’t work with your RX-V663! There is a bug with either the RX-V663 receiver or the ATI drivers or both! The ATI video cards will not recognize the RX-V663 as an HDMI device so you will not get “ANY” audio through HDMI with that receiver until someone corrects the problem.

I have personally tried everything imaginable to get the audio from my 3850 and brand new 4850 to work with my RX-V663. It just is not going to happen until ATI and Yamaha start talking.

If you want this to work then please do two things.

Submit a Yamaha support ticket at the link below. Be really nice and just explain that you are unable to get audio from your ATI video card because the RX-V663 is not recognized as an HDMI device. Let them know that all other brands of receivers work with the ATI cards but none of the newest Yamaha receivers work with it. Also let them know that the older RX-V661 and V1700 receivers work.

Also please submit a ticket to ATI at the link below. You will have to register with them but this will be the fastest way to get a resolution.

The more people that email them the faster the problem will get resolved.

If emailing them does not work then your only other option would be to do what I have done. Go buy the Gefen DVI Detective Plus and two DVI to HDMI cables. It will cost you about $160 and you will have to wait a few weeks but it will resolve the issue. I do realize this is not a reasonable option for 99% of the people. Why spend $160 to get a $150 video card to work!

Here is a thread that discusses the problem

Thank you very much for the explanation. I have already opened a support ticket with Yamaha. I will open one with ATI.

My PC has a SPDIF output. Do you know if I can use that for the digital audio and the HDMI for the video to the receiver?

Yes that will work and is actually what I am currently doing until my Gefen device gets here.
