Hi all - apologies in advance I am new to this, but  am in desparate need for help.  I am currently deciding between a Panasonic Viera TC-L37D2 (about 4 years old but hardly used, in like new condition) for $275 or a Refurbished Vizio E390i-A1 for $335.  The Vizio is a Smart TV but for the price difference I cold get a Roku or ChromeCast.

My two questions - if anyone is familiar with both sets - please comment on which is better, specifically looking at picture quality.

Second, in generally, I believe the Panasonic is probably a better TV, but is 4 years old - how far has technology come?  Is a four year old really good tv better than a pretty good new TV, or vice versa?

Thanks!

Personally I don't think I'd buy either. There has been some improvement over the past few years so the Panny is a bit dated, but Vizio is really a third tier product and I would argue with anyone I know who wants to buy one - much better choices out there. I would not buy anything only because it's listed as "Smart", most of them are very limited, perhaps more of an idiot savant - might do one thing well but are total idiots at most everything else. You can buy a Chrome for $30 and it will do more and do it better than most if not all "smart' TVs.

What I'd do with a $300-350 budget is watch for sales, clearance or open box units from major manufactures like Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Sony and then Toshiba, Sharp and so on. I'd group Vizio with RCA, Magnavox, and any of the low end Chinese manufacturers.
