I’m building a new Home Cinema, with the following specs:

The room is 23.8 ft x 14 ft (7.25 m x 4.25 m)

100% light control

Projector Barco BG1209/2 (700 hours)

Fixed frame screen 120†wide 16:9

I would like to have a 120†(3.0 m) wide screen 16:9 format, but I’m very much in doubt about the choice of screen material. 120†is about the max you can do on a BG1209, so I would think that a high gain would be the right choice but then people are talking about hotspotting and “too much lightâ€.

Whats the problem with too much gain? On a CRT you can lower the output of light and that would only be good for the life of the tubes. Or am I missing something here.

Which screen should I choose?

Thanks

You won't have to worry about "too much" light with that size screen. What you will get is a very apparent color shift. It may be intolerable at that size with a high gain. You may want to look into a curved screen, as it can help reduce the color shift problem. Check the DIY forum.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the answer

You think 120" is too big for a 9" with fresh tubes, and 100% light control?

I could stack since I have 2 of them but the other has 5k hours and Im afraid that I will spend all my time converging.

How high in gain would you recommend that I should go?

Well, I personally wouldn't go that big. I would stick to well under 100" wide. If you go the torus route, you will probably end up using a 3+ gain reflective material. If it were me, and I had to have a very large screen, I would go with 100" wide Stewart Videomatte 200. I use the 1.3 gain Stewart material at 80" wide with my 8" and I wouldn't want to go any bigger/dimmer.

The videomatte is going to be a good choice down the road as digital technologies progress and your CRTs wear out. In other words, it will probably be the last screen you will need to buy.

As far as stacking goes, it can be done and done well. I've seen Art Sonneborn's setup...wow. His screen is not even close to 120" wide, though.

Funny you said Videomatte. I was looking at the Stewart Videomatte 200 or the Draper M2500.

Do you have the microperf option?

The other option about curved screen sounds interesting, but is it possible on the BG1209/2 since I have no Scheimpflug adjustment?

My last screen was 96" wide, 2.0 gain and it had a little colour shifting, but was extreamly bright, had to have the Brightness at 39 and the contrast at 45 (1-100) to keep correct white/blacklevel.

Thats why I feel that 120" width should not be a problem.

Thanks

No microperf here. I actually ordered it that way and it came in non-perf. I was able to negotiate a big discount so I kept it :).

Scheimpflug is for balancing focus from corner to corner, so you shouldn't need it if your mounting is standard (no tilt, skew, etc.). I used to use a small torus screen and the focus was as easy as with a flat screen.

96" vs. 120" wide 16x9 is almost a 60% increase in area. Still think it should not be a problem? :D

Actually it's wider. I thought Art's screen was 11' wide. That would make it 132" wide.

It didn't seem that big. Thanks for the fact check.

By the way, nice theater!
