I would like a 7.1 surround sound system if I can afford it, but before I go buying all new gear, I want to know if it is worth my time and money to replace all the speakers on my current sound system.

I currently have a Sony SU-S5420 (Receiver)

Sony SEN-R5420 (Sub woofer case)

Sony SS-U541AV (Tower Speaker)

Sony SS-U64 (Satellite)

Sony SS-CN64 (Center)

This is the closest manual I can find for it, but it is a different model.

The 2 Satellite speakers are (3.5") that say they are 8 ohm at 50 Watt Max input.

The Center speaker is (3.5") says it's a 6 ohm at 66 Watt Max input.

The two rear speakers have 3 speakers on them, what seems like a tweeter (1"), a mid (3.5"), and a woofer (8") The box says it's 8 ohms at 200 Watts Max

The Sub-Woofer is an unknown wattage/ohms but it's a 6.5" Speaker.

Again, I am looking to either replace the speakers in these and maybe get a new receiver if I need to, but I don't know what kind of receiver to even get, or if I will even need a amplifier or not.

I do not want a boxed setup, and I would like to reach 750 Watts or more if I can at a price under $500

Thank you for the fast reply.

Sorry, I forgot to state that the tower speakers are blown, hence needing to be replaced , so I would like something I can do sooner.

I don't understand what to look for in a receiver, and while I understand speakers RMS and Max power, do I need a receiver that has the max power of the speakers I have, in each channel, or can I just plug my current speakers into it and it work the same as what I have right now?

Like the one you linked is 90 Watt per channel, but If I had a speaker with 150 RMS and 300 Watt Max would I need one with 150 per channel or what? A simple explanation would be nice if you could.

I don't know what kind of speakers are in the towers, I think they are just Woofers, but maybe Subs? I don't know.

Ignore the power ratings, they're just telling you that you could fry the speakers if you feed them more power then that continuously. You want a receiver with an auto room eq, and from one of the major players (Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer, HK).

I guess the best thing you could do is replace the front 3 speakers right now, you could even squeeze a receiver in for a hair over your budget.

Thank you for your time and insight.

One last thing, would it be cheaper for me to buy the speakers separately and put them into my case that I already have?

I would need an 8" Woofer, 3.5" Mid, and a 1" Tweeter /x2 for the towers and 2 3.5" Mids for the Center.

If not I will go with the links you have already given me, and get those.

You can't do that. You would need exact replacement drivers from Sony, and you would have to check the crossover to see if anything was fried.

3 infinity p153 bookshelves for lcr $50 each - world wide audio

denon avr 1612 refurb. $170 - accessories4less

you can pretty much pick up a cheap pair of speakers for rears (for example a pair of dayton audio b652 for $30 at parts express)

Nice setup for this budget range. And the BIC F12 will blow away a 6.5" subwoofer

Nope. It would be more expensive and would likely end up sounding worse. If you don't like the sound of your speakers buy new speakers and put your old ones on Craig's list. Another cost saving way to go is to purchase used speakers. Sometimes some good vintage speakers can be bought for cheap and you do the refurbishing if you want a project.

There is no law that says you have to replace them all at once though that would be the preferred method. You could start by replacing the mains then do the others at a later date when finaces allow. Life is too short to be stuck with speakers you don't like listening to.
