well, i've owned two dlp's so far, and i like them alot. you'll get some rainbows with dlp's, but they have better blacks and no screen door effect. there is a 46 inch toshiba dlp that they sell at pc richards for around $1800. both dlp's and lcd's are slim. as gaming goes i never had a problem with it. the one's that had problems were the one's playing ps2 at 480i. if your gonna go with a dlp, make sure it has the h2+ chip in it(it has better blacks). my views are a little biased due to the fact that i like dlp's. my unbiased advice would be to ask the store your gonna buy your tv from if you can try both of them out, so if your not digging either one you can return them. hope that help's. 
plus remember it's always better to get a bigger tv(if its good for your room) than a smaller one. trust me, eventually even a 50inch will look small.
