Need Help Deciding on Sub Woofer

522 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  SightSeeker1
I am puting together a new system for my car. So far I have decided on the following:

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X990

Kenwood KTC-HR100TR HD Radio Tuner w/Multicasting Ready

Kenwood KCA-iP500 Ipod Control Interface

What I can't decide on and don't know much about is the Sub Woofer. I want to keep the stock speakers and just add a nice kicking sub. I have been searching around and like the following items but don't know what one would be best for me.

Rockford Fosgate PL1-212 Punch Stage 1 dual 12" ported enclosed subwoofer

Power range 50-300 watts RMS x 2 Subs

or

Rockford Fosgate PL2-212 Punch Stage 2 dual 12" ported enclosed subwoofer

Power range 50-400 watts RMS x 2 Subs

or

Rockford Fosgate PL3-212 Punch Stage 3 dual 12" ported enclosed subwoofer

Power range 100-1,000 watts RMS (250 watts per coil) x 2 Subs

My friend has Rockford Fosgate and really likes them and I like the look of these pre made ported boxes. I just hope they are good and worth the cost.

Then for Amps I was looking at:

Rockford Fosgate Punch P5002

» 2-channel car amplifier

» 125 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (250 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)

» 500 watts RMS in bridged mode at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)

or

Rockford Fosgate Punch P6002

» 2-channel car amplifier

» 150 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (300 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)

» 600 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)

Can anyone help me with this? Are these any good? Will any combo of these work together? If not what would work?

Thanks.

I have been doing some more searching, another thing I don't know about is if they should be in stereo or bridged. My friend said his is all bridged so if I bridge mine I think this setup would work and not be to expensive from brandnamez.com (found in a search on froogle.com):

ROCKFORD FOSGATE DUAL 12' SUBWOOFER ENCLOSURE, 600W RMS, 2 X 8 OHMS => Model PL1-212 $215.00

ROCKFORD FOSGATE AMPLIFIER, 2 CH, 550W, 4 OHMS, RMS, RCA => Model P550.2 $265.00

Sub Total: $480.00

Shipping: $69.80

Grand Total: $ 549.80

When looking at various sites it says the Subwoofers can be bridged to be 4 ohms and would they take 600 watts if bridged since each are 300 watts? Then I could bridge the amp and get 550 watts at 4 ohms. Is this all correct and will this all work well and give me a good setup? If yes what else would I need? I read something about a Capacitor is recomended usually?

Thanks.

There isn't much talk of car audio on AVS so I don't know how much help your going to get here but I can throw in my .02. I have 2 12" rockford punch speakers and a power amplifier running 2 channels 112.5 watts a channel in a sealed box and it hits pretty hard. Most people think I have a lot more power going to them. This is in a Ford Explorer so it's not a small car. I'd recommend them.

You will want a Capacitor if you hook it up and your lights dim when you are at a stop. Usually it depends on the size of the battery and alternator in the car.
