I know combos arnt great but my mom wants one to record home movies and stuff to dvd and I would kinda like to back my stuff up to. Now I did a very dumb thing and went and bought one of the sylvania model#ssr90v4's from sams which turned out to be more like model#pos2000 the thing wont work with any discs I've tried to feed it and when I finally got sylvanias support people the guy told me to hold on he'd check about the firmware update I heard about I was on hold for an hour and they hung up on me welp it's going back to sams. So far the only one I can find is the Panasonic DMR-ES40VS. I wanna know if it will take normal 8x dvd-r's and is there any region free hacks or anything like that.

If you look around, you might be able to get that model's predecessor, the ES30V which many here seem to prefer over the 40V.

Being Panasonic's latest model, it should be compatible with 8x -R's. Check videohelp.com and click on "DVD Hacks" to see if it can be made region free.
