I am new to the HDTV experience and could use some help picking accesories such as dvd players and sound systems to compliment the tv. I would prefer to keep it all sony

I picked up the sony 34 kdxs955 HDTV about two weeks ago and I am thrilled with it. I live in Canada so I have to use a HD Digital box to display HD content even though the tv has the built in tuner.

I am thrilled with the HD programming when it is widescreen and the show is recorded in HD but some of the HD networks here still display in 4:3 aspect ratio and even the quality of older shows on the hd channels that was not recorded in hd seems to be lacking. Is this normal?

Anyways, can anyone help me pick a sony dvd player for this tv. upscaling and all of that is confusing to me thus far. Any help on other accesories would help as well

thanks

I would not spend much $$$ on a conventional DVD player - not with 1080i HD/B-DVDs coming out next year. Even if you get a cheap sub-$100 interlaced player - XS955 will upscale it to 960i. I got the new Sony 975 with 1080i upscaling and HDMI just to see how it would look (it's very good), but probably a cheap interlaced player with component out would be just as good (this TV has upscaling circuitry of its own). Heck, even a stupid interlaced VCR looks pretty good on the XS955.

Also, I would not pay much extra for HDMI - whether its DVD output or cable - go with simple component. There is some evidence from previous posters that Sony used the cheap route in HDMI input circuitry path (essentially they seem to convert HDMI input signal to component path as soon as they receive it using not very good quality DACs) - component is just as good (in fact better in my experience with this TV). Hope that helps
