I am down to 2 receivers to chose from. the Onkyo 706 or the 806...just trying to decide if the 806 is worth the extra $100? I am already at my highest budget level, but do not mind buying the better of the two receivers. but do not want to pay extra unless necessary. My last receiver lasted about 11 years, so I would like to buy it once and be done.

I am mostly into movies and have a S350 Blu with boston acoustic speakers and a BIC sub.

The last step is taking longer than any other step so any help will be appreciated.

I am struggling with this same decision. I have pretty much made up my mind on the 806, but am still open to being convinced otherwise. The difference in price is more like $80 at amazon.

The extra HDMI input is really the only selling feature that has influenced me so far.

Anyone out there that purchased these care to share your reasons for one over the other...?

I am in the same boat you are. Now I am questioning whether I should even stick w/Onkyo. I can't seem to good info on options and alternatives to the onkyo 706.

I was convinced the 606 was my answer but was encouraged to step up to the 706. Now OP are saying that with discounts and price wars and coupon codes, I owe it to myself to step up to at least the 805 for a few $'s more.

Prices are going up, I too need to make buy, this week hopefully, but at this price point I'm wondering if Onkyo is it.

Interested to know what you decided.

I purchased the 806 about a month ago. So far I am very happy. My reason for wanting the 806 is just to accomodate future upgrades. The higher level of THX certification means it "should" perform better in larger rooms. The 806 does upconversion over component and HDMI. The 706 does upconversion through HDMI only. I think the 806 has a 12v trigger out and in if you are using other devices. The 5 HDMI inputs are a plus also.

I will admit there are problems with the upscaling to 1080p but, hopefully Onkyo will release a firmware upgrade to fix this. I use a PS3, Xbox and HDDVR with this and haven't had any problems so far. I do not use the video management section at all so I can't comment on it. I only send the signal through.

I think the main thing is it is relatively new and major problems are still being worked out.

Thanks Juggy. I am thinking the 806 is the way to go. I was looking into saving a little money but at this point I am just going to go with the better of the receivers. I have not heard anything bad about the 806 so I think I will go with it and see what happens.

I will still wait to hear anyone else chime in on the subject.

I just ordered the 806 from 6ave.com for less then $600, hopefully it will arrive by Friday.

I went through the same thought process, started with the 606 but then decided I wanted the extra features of the 706 and then finally went with the 806 because the price difference was to good to pass up.

I am also having to make the same decision. I orginally planned on getting the 606, but due to no pre-outs to add an external amp I scrapped that and upped to the 706. Now looking at the 806 it seems like the best choice.
