Need Help in Selecting DLP HDTV

590 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Shape
I want to buy a 50/52" DLP HDTV. I've looked at Mitsubishi WD-52525, Samsung HL-P5063W and the JVC HD-52Z575. From my perpspective, they all have good pic quality while JVC seems the brightest. Any comments would be appeciated.

I spent a couple weeks looking at DLP sets. I went with the Panasonic because I thought it had the best picture and general opinion on here was positive.
All of the sets you have put on your list are good. Depending on your needs, the Mitsubishi has the most features of the sets you listed. The JVC is the brightest, but that isn't always a good thing. It's brightness definitely affects it's black level. The 63 series Samsung is a nice "entry level" set I would personally look at the 74 or 85 series if you want a better picture. I think the Mits has the best overall picture, you will have to decide that for yourself in the end. The Panasonic mentioned above is a decent set, it wasn't on your list though. I would rank it as the second best looking DLP on the market today. Hope that helps.
I personally like the Mitsubishi the best. I have the 62725. You didn't have the Toshiba 52HM/HMX DLP on your list. From my perspective, the Mitsubishi will give you the cleanest sharpest picture out of all the sets and will clean up poor signals better than the rest too. It also has the most features and if you aren't familiar with netcommand I think you'll really like it. You can name your inputs, select DVD for example (not to mention there are predefined icons for each type of connection you setup) and it will switch to that input, switch your receiver to the correct input and power on your DVD player. I found that the JVC will give the brightest picture but has the worst black levels. The Toshiba is second in brightness and has the best black levels. However, it has the least amount of features and is not as sharp as it could be. The HD2+ Samsung model (the pedestal model) is a good set too with good features. I only saw one Panasonic but wasn't blown away. For some reason the Panasonic DLP is only in high end stores and never released a 60" version??? As far as the Mitsubishi goes, it isn't as bright as some of the other sets and the daytime blacks do need improvement, and lastly if you had sunlight in your room you will see some glare. Outside of those issues, the Mitsubishi is in a league of its own and if the above issues don't bother you then I'd get the Mitsubishi without question.

I think the Panasonic has the best picture with the Mitsubishi second. The Panny is especially good with SD. At a B&M with the Panny right next to the Mitsu, the Panny smoked the Mits in SD. In HD, it's a tossup. But beware of the anti-glare screen on the Mits if you have a lot of light in the room. Then you would need to remove it. The Sammy 85 series may be actually better than both of the above, but is also quite a bit more expensive.

The JVC is not actually a DLP at all, but it has great brightness. The blacks aren't good on the JVC's and the overall PQ isn't as good IMO.

You need to try to look at the different sets in different locations and at different times. I looked at them at least a dozen times before making a decision. The Panny looked the best most of the time, but there were a couple times where someone had made it look like absolute crap. If I had just come in that once, the Panny would have been out of the running.

I have heard that the 62" Mitsu isn't terribly bright. However, the 52" is VERY bright. Like "film snaps in a movie theater bright." :)
