Hi, I want to build a small 7.1 HT in my basement. The room is 13.3ft x 15.3ft. Ceiling will be around 7ft high. Is the room too square-like? Is the room too small?

Any recommendation on low cost sound insulation? I don't need to soundproof the HT room, just want to make it less offensive to the family room upstair...

Equipments

- Paradigm CC170, 2 x Atom for front/center.

- 4 x Paradigm Cinema ADP for rear

- HSU STF-1 subwoofer

- Onkyo TX-SR504 7.1 Channel A/V Receiver

TV and seating to be detertermined...

Thanks

Spend some time looking at a lot of the 'XXX home theater is starting' and see what people are doing for ideas.

A sketch of the space would be helpful, with any windows, stairs, doors, pillars, etc.

How many people do you want to seat? How big a screen?

My project is almost the exact same size as yours. Yours is actually about 1 foot larger in each dimension except height.

Here's a sketchup of my project:

Personally, I think it's very viable. Obviously it's an intimate setting and I'll only have seating for 4-6 people max. I had the same goal as you with regards to sound proofing. All I did was add standard insulation to my walls and ceiling + drywall. Not trying to create a perfect sound room, just wanted to improve it a bit.

There is only one window in the upper-middle of one side of the wall. And one door open at the front of the HT room where the TV will be located. I will try to get a picture.

Seating is probably a 3 seat sofa (one row). Don't want to get the room too crowd as I am planning to put a study desk there as well.

Is carpet preferred? Will laminated wood floor work as well?

Insulation is your cheapest/easiest soundproofing. Then more drywall, then a solid core door w/weatherstripping. Then we start to spend $$$.

Carpet is prefered. Area rugs over laminate and a pad would help.

Minus my false screenwall my room will be 13x15.5 - I am hoping for a couch, plus barstools, plus beanbags for seating. Construction is underway (pics in thread). This is the goal:
