Need Help Selecting A DC3 Projector (w/ Lens-Shift)

1183 Views 22 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  ftlee
I have a 123" Stewart Silver 3D (2.2 Gain) screen and want to acheive a plasma-like picture and have better contrast than the IF7205 had. I previously had a IF7205. At the moment, the three projectors that I am looking at are:

Sim2 300E (I do not know if these numbers are at D65)

900 Lumens

>3500:1 Contrast Ratio (Is this with white-peaking off)

8000 Hour Bulb Life :)

Dwin TV3E (Advertised Numbers)

1200 Lumens

3000:1 Contrast Ratio (Is this with white-peaking off)

2000 Hour Bulb Life :(

Optoma H79 (Calibrated at D65)

Around 550 Lumens in regular lamp mode

2700:1 Contrast Ratio

2000 / 3000 Hours Bulb Life

Does anyone know what the Dwin numbers are calibrated for D65?

I know that the IF7205 has a contrast-ratio of 1450:1 when it is calibrated for D65 and white-peaking is turned to zero.

Thoughts / Recommendations...

Thanks,

Frank

and why not also an IF 7210? DC3 too, and possibly you can get back your 7205 to the seller...
Don't forget the BenQ PE8720 (1000 lumens, 5500:1 CR). Problem is it isn't shipping yet.
BenQ and IF, no lens shift (read initial post)

Oohh!

While thinking about DC3. How is this possible? Sharp hasn't released a projector with DC3? They used to be one of the first to announce a pj at each HD# DMD release since HD1. Any insight?
The stated contrast ratio for the H79 is 4500:1 - did someone already measure an actual 2700:1 when calibrated to D65? It looked better black level wise than my HT1000 in limited viewing my first night ( last night ) anyway.
Craig,

Guitarman measured it at 27xx:1 and without looking through that huge thread again, someone else measured it at 28xx:1 (D65 / White-Peaking Off).

ftlee,

How do you like the Silver 3d screen??

Thanks. I do think it important to differentiate actual measured contrast ratio ( when it is known ) to officially published maximum contrast ratio specification - so we don't get confused by two sets of numbers!!
Same deal for the D65k lumens. Believe me that 550 is huge for an PJ tuned for D65k.

guitarman,

The Infocus 7205 puts out 11xx lumens calibrated to D65. I am hoping that the Sim2 300E is somewhere between the H79 and the 7205. Closer to the 7205 would be good! ;)

Frank
Frank,

Could you answer my question about the screen?

That may be, and I've seen two of them. But I've come to the conclusion that with a much higher real contrast ratio, and with a much better actual black level, that unless one is trying to drive a giant screen - the projector with the better black level appears almost as bright. The 7205's I saw just looked " washed out ". Nobody selling them appears to know how to set them up. I'll take the better blacks every time. Damn that HT1000 - it ruined me........................
scottyb,

I will PM you so that we do not get this thread off in another direction.

Frank
Craig,

No dought, the Infocus gives up contrast ratio to provide those lumens. Boy, I sure hope the 300E can do 900 lumens and 3500:1 contrast ratio.

900 lumens at 3500:1 after calibration with a 120W bulb? I would say the chances of that are about as close to zero as you can get. If it does an actual 450 lumens at 2800:1 that would be at the higher end of my expectations for it.

I thought you bought the 300E? Anyway, the 300E I had to demo didn't measure Anything like that. Even with blues cranked up just to see how bright I could get it I measured about 200 lumens with an Extech light meter measuring 100IRE at 14' x110" screen. Could have been my unit, but I had no other reason to think anything wasn't up to par with it. I can't see how 900 is possible. My demo wouldn't have done that with an extra bulb (or 3). I'm gonna see a H79 in the next week or so and I'll measure it with the same meter. I also have a Marantz S3 here now and it's way brighter than the 300E (that I had) was.

HTH, but I know it won't :(
darinp2,

So, you think that the Optoma H79 is brighter than the Sim2 300E? Have you seen both?

Thanks,

Frank
Ok, so the DWin is out. So, it is between the Optoma H79 and the Sim2 300E. I want which ever one is brighter. I wish someone would come clean with the 300E numbers. Someone on AVS has to know them.

Please someone post what the lumens and contrast ratio is of the Sim2 300E calibrated to D65. If you do not want to post publically, PM me and I will keep it to myself.
