If using analog, set the distances in the A1's menu and ideally you would use bypass mode on your AVR which will mean you will typically have only level controls (if that) and no option for distance setting/bass management. See the analog setup link in my signature for more detailed info.
If using HDMI, set the A1 to "bypass" which means all distances at zero, levels at zero, speakers at Large, sub to Use. Then, do all necessary bass management in the AVR.
