Hello AVSForum community,

Currently I have a garbage Luminar Projector (ya one of those ones sold from the back of a van). The quality is so awful that I can see each individual pixel, and the picture is fuzzy no matter how much I adjust the lens. I have finally had enough and am looking to purchase a real projector! I have made a fixed projector screen using Projector Screen Material bought off Carl's Place.

I have read the sticky and I do not know where to begin, so I am here asking for your guys assistance.

Budget: Around $2000
Screen: 110-120 inches
Throw: Long room so the distance does not matter.
Mount: Ceiling
Uses: Usually we plug in a laptop and watch movies. It would also be nice to play games on my laptop through Steam, but it isn't a necessity. We also have a Blu-ray player that we use sometimes.

Let me know if I have missed any details.
Thanks, and I apologize for another one of these threads.

I forgot to add that light is not an issue because I can cover the windows if necessary.

OK, a few additional details.

1: Colour of walls/ceiling and floor.

2: Do you intend to play 4K or stick with 1080P

3: Are you open to buying secondhand or refurb?

Guys don't get side tracked into personal arguments. ;)
@pxxb you should look at the classifieds as you'll find quite a few JVCs in there around your price. You'll be getting a seriously great PJ with amazing image quality and first rate gaming potential.

Great questions. I will wait for a response before I weigh in.

1. Walls are light cream peachy colour, ceiling is white, and have brown hardwood. If the wall colour is an issue I wouldn't mind repainting my basement haha.
2. I'm leaning towards 1080. Is 4k that noticeable compared to 1080p at this price point?
3. I would prefer buying new, but could be convinced otherwise.

If you want 4k go with ht3550 and save a few bucks.

If you want the best picture get the epson hc4000 or whatever the current iteration of that is.

I would suggest waiting for a price drop on an Epson 4010. It can usually be found new between 1799 and 1999. Lag for gaming in 28ms. Not too shabby. No support for 18GBPS. Decent contrast. 2400 lumens. Good faux 4K performance using e-shift. Great upscaling of 1080p to 4k. Good HDR images. At your price point it is a really good option.

I know of at least two members who are selling Epson 5040ub units for under $2K, one of 'em has a Extra Lamp

I also know someone (Member) who is selling a Panasonic PT-AE 8000u....never used....essentially Brand New....for under $800.00.
That would be the absolute buy of the Century for someone just getting started .

The advice you received to look in the AVS Classified is well given. Avail yourself of it.

Ok, your wall and ceiling colour will greatly affect the blacks from any projector, so whilst it’s an issue it shouldn’t stop you buying a projector that produces great blacks because long term you can paint those walls and ceiling Matt black.

The suggestion of the Epson 4010 is a brilliant new projector, very crisp bright image that has brill upscaling so your 1080P discs will appear 4K with its e-shift processing, only negative is it’s black levels are only a little better than a 4K DLP projector. The reason I suggested a secondhand JVC is you’ll get Epson 5050/6050 levels of performance with even superior blacks if and when you change the wall colour.

When you consider the 5050 is $3k and the 6050 is $4k getting a secondhand JVC at $2k or even less might be the smarter move.

Another worthwhile projector to consider is the Sony HW45es and this you will definitely be able to get new in budget, I still have mine as a backup and on 1080P material you can’t tell the difference between it and the dearest Epson plus it’s black levels are very similar to that Epson too.

Here’s a couple of pics from my Sony.

I can recommend the UHD50.

I suggest you paint your projection wall grey with a projection paint formulation, and then put up curtain rods with black drapes along the walls. Close the drapes for serious movie watching and open them for brightness and colour when that's desired. Here's some examples of my UHD50 on a 145in painted screen:

A grey screen works well in rooms with some ambient light, see here:

I would think that the BenQ HT355O would work well for you, also.

Your going to get a lot of strong opinions, but projectors aren't a one size fits all proposition. A lot has to do with how you're going to be using it and in what kind of conditions. For instance, I have a dedicated theater room/entertainment room and we wanted a projector that would be able to do movies in a theater environment but we also wanted to host football games with moderate to bright lighting. We settled on the epson 4010 last October and I haven't regretted it for a second, while it doesn't boast the contrast of it's more expensive big brother, we haven't watched a movie yet and felt like we were missing out a great deal on contrast. It also has the lumen out put to produce bright lively pictures in a room with a good deal of light, which for us is fantastic when watching Sunday football with friends. Another benefit that I hadn't intended was the pixel shift 4k capability, it wasn't a primary selling point for me, but I was floored when I actually experience it with some amazon prime streaming content, it's out standing, so much so I added 4k player to my set up and have been adding 4k titles to my collection. Price being no object there are better projectors, but in my opinion at your price point you would be hard pressed to find a better all around performing projector.

Is this PJ for you or for him?

He didn’t mention competitive gaming.

I game regularly on my UHD50 and I suck just as bad on that as I do on a 1ms lag monitor.

Not a factor.

Jeez did I hit a nerve? Was just trying to point that he might not like that projector for gaming.

I will say I game on a Benq 2050 and recently purchased a C9 OLED. 33ms vs 13ms and it is a very noticeable difference for quite a few games. Wife and son both noticed a difference too. Tried Cuphead, Hollow Knight, God War etc and I imagine Tekken would benefit greatly from lower lag. That being said I mainly game on the projector for the immersion factor/sound/dedicated room.

Excellent suggestions so far but do you have any audio setup? If not, with that budget, grab a Benq 2050a (only 1080p but 16ms input lag, probably best bang for the buck), paint, maybe a dark rug to help with both light and sound reflections, and look into a budget receiver/5.1 setup.
