Being new to audio, I've read the FAQ section and I am still having problems understanding why an audio receiver needs to process video.

It's not so much that I care that it processes video, it's that when I research reviews on receivers that are recommended on AVS, a lot of the reviews give the video processors in the various receivers a con rather than a pro. I have had to nix several choices because of bad video processing.

I have Directv service w/HDMI to my Panasonic plasma. I also have a DVD player (soon to be replaced by a Blu-Ray player) w/HDMI to my Panasonic.

I am perfectly happy with the video on my plasma and would simply like to have the video "pass-through" the audio receiver without any further processing. I only want the audio receiver to send the audio to it's speakers for Directv, DVD, and CD playing.

I do want to use my HDMI cables into the receiver then out to the TV to avoid masses of cables.

What am I missing here?

^^Most (all?) AVRs that include video processing only perform this function on analog video inputs (digitize signal so it can be transmitted via HDMI and, in some instances, scale up the resolution). If your inputs are via HDMI already, an AVR shouldn't touch them - just pass them through to your TV.

That makes sense and I'm glad to hear it. Would it be fair to say that if I find a receiver that has everything I want, but CNET or other reviewers give it a negative on the video processor, then I can ignore the poor video processor part of the review?

That's your call to make but if it was me, I would do what you've said. I say this because HDTVs pretty much do a better job of scaling up video signals to their (the TV's) native resolution (something HDTVs are designed to do automatically) than many/most AVRs. JMO
