Need Help with 4k/Atmos AVR Upgrade! Denon vs Marantz vs Anthem vs Separates

809 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  eriksells916
This forum steered me straight with my first HT build - new house and time to upgrade. 70:30 Movie:Music

Current Components:
Mitsubishi 3800 1080p Projector
Onkyo TXNR3007 9.2 - running 4 ohm setting for front channels
JL Fathom F113
Monitor Audio Silver Front, Center, and Surrounds in 7.1 configuration

Upgrade Components:
Sony 295es Projector
4 Monitor Audio C265IDC Atmos Speakers

I need a new AVR to facilitate this upgrade and maximize existing/new components. I had it narrowed down to:

Denon 6500h
Marantz SR8012
Anthem 1120

Also have been considering saving cash buying the Denon and adding an amp for the fronts to maximize headroom in the system.

Would LOVE input in this regard - the speakers and projector were installed yesterday so I'm dying to get the receiver setup.

Thanks in advance!

Succinctly, I'd like to know the best bang for my buck to get the most out of my speakers understanding their constraints.

My Onkyo had done a great job, but with the fronts being 4 ohms at 175 watts I'm not sure the AVRs have enough to drive 7.1.4 with enough authority.

Really appreciate any insights!
Not familiar with the Anthem; however, you can drop the AV8801 from consideration as that is a 2012 model which is unable to pass 4k/HDCP 2.2 video. To save $$$, instead of purchasing another amp, use the Onkyo to power the L/C/R speakers and let the X6500H (which also features Auro 3D and IMAX Enhanced DTS:X) power the remaining speakers (ie. if you feel the X6500H is unable to get the job done on its own).

Quick edit - i meant to type the Marantz 8012 (not 8801). I have a buddy with the 8801 and must have had a freudian slip...

Sounds like an excellent idea - hadn't ever thought of running an AVR to an AVR as a Pre/Pro to an Amp! Any problem with the Onkyo amplifier in this case? Any reason to spend the extra cash on a 3 channel amp like emotiva, rotel, etc?

as jd said, use the x6500 to power all other channels and the onkyo to power the lcr. Yes many members here use a a good (rotel, emotiva, etc) amp to power their LR or LCR, but the Onkyo you have should be plenty capable as a 3 channel amp.
