I think that Nak is a Nelson Pass design ... a very good amp...I doubt the emotivas are better

Need help with acoustat 2+2 amp
Currently powering the acoustat's with Nakamichi PA-7 I am thinking about replacing the Nak with a pair of mono block Emotiva XPA-1's.
I am using an Emotiva USP-1 preamp. I guess the question is , will the 2+2's sound better w the blocks?

I think that replacing the Nakamichi amplifier with an Emotiva is like replacing a Ferrari with a Mazda Miata; a big step down in performance.
Nelson Pass, by the way, never had anything to do with designing Nakamichi amplifiers. Nakamichi's own engineers design all of their equipment.
It is a class A amplifier and therefore runs rather hot, which is normal for it.
If you want a really good amplifier at a fairly reasonable price, look at the Vincent 331; that is an excellent one that will work well with those speakers.

No, saying the Emotiva isn't that great is ridiculous. The Emotiva will work just fine and probably save you some money too.

I got the idea when I heard it myself struggle to power a set of speakers that dropped to 2 Ohms in the midbass. Granted, the room was HUGE and the playback levels were insane, but it did struggle mightily. Another amp with similar ratings did fine at the same volume levels.
And who cares that it was rated Amplifier of the Year by the Absolute Sound? I mean, really, besides you, who reads that sill magazine these days?

Agreed. The comparison of the Emotiva to a Miata was IMO ridiculous.
Even greater savings may accrue if the Nak continues to serve wall. I sense audiophile nervosa.

Yes it does run warm and I was told that when I bought it. It is working very well, I will just stay with it for a while. Off topic, should I have a surge protector for each speaker (2+2) each speaker has a wall plug being electrostats and all..............
Since you guys are talking Nakamichi....anyone know how to set the timer (Nak DT101) so that it will control--turn on & off---the 2 AC jacks on the rear ?
