Before posting this thread I've searched thru this section in a hope to figure out which codec to install.

Since I built this HTPC for a family member I want to keep it simple, I don't want to install any codec packs that will cause him problems.

Using above Blu-ray player movies from video store play perfect without stuttering.

I was not able to play .mkv and xvid/divx files.

1. My question is should I only install ffdshow ?

2. I've read one post here that says ffdshow uses lots of computer resources?

3. Any similar experiences, what did you end up using?

For MKV you need the haali media splitter. That and FFDShow should be enough for 99.9999999% of the files you are going to ever play back

Thanks guys!

Any basic/simple guide for FFDShow ?

I found one posted here is for me at least very advanced/complicated.
