Need help with setting the crossover frequency on my speakers

846 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Alan P
I just set up a new home theater system and I'm not clear on how to set the crossover frequency for my speakers. I have Sony tower front speakers that show a rating of 45 Hz for the minimum frequency response, and my center channel speaker shows a rating of 55 Hz for the minimum frequency response. I currently have the crossover frequency set to 80 Hz for all of these speakers. Is this acceptable or should I be using something else?

Secondly, I have a Sony subwoofer and there is a dial on the back of the subwoofer called Cutoff Frequency with a range of 200 Hz to 50 Hz. What should I be setting this to?

80 Hertz is a great place to start. Max the subwoofer crossover.

Do you mean max the sub crossover or cut off? It's 2 separate settings. Everything I have read says the sub crossover should be set to 120 Hz.

Max on the back of the sub knob. In the AVR settings leave the “LPF for LFE” at the default 120Hz.

Yes your avr manages the sub crossover. You don't want any crossover in the sub.
Do you have an AVR with room correction (e.g. Audyssey, YPAO, MCACC, etc.)? If so, run it. The room correction will tell you the recommended crossovers for your speakers in your room.

If any of the resulting crossovers are below 80Hz, raise them to 80Hz. If any are above 80Hz, leave them alone.
